Command-Line Basics

In this chapter, we’re going to dive right into the Linux command line. We will explain what makes it so powerful and, by extension, important to every system administrator and DevOps person. But more importantly, we will start teaching you the most useful commands and a way to use them efficiently. Along the way, we will be adding other core Linux concepts, as they will be required to understand the chapter.

In this chapter, we’re going to cover the following main topics:

  • What a command line is and how it works
  • Why it is so important to feel comfortable working with the command line
  • Basic commands for Linux system administration

It is not possible to introduce all the commands and tools in a single chapter. What follows is our choice of the most basic tools you will need to know. Managing the Linux system is a separate book topic on its own. It so happens that Packt does have several publications on that.
