Simplifying 3D Printing with OpenSCAD

Chapter 1: Getting Started with 3D Printing

One of the best-value 3D printers on the market today is the Creality Ender 3 V2 3D printer, offering a decently sized print bed with a sturdy aluminum frame. So popular is the Ender 3 V2 and other Ender 3 series printers that you can also find many upgrades and modifications to add; many of these may be 3D printed using the printer itself.

The history of 3D printers can be traced back to the 1980s. Early printers involved the use of lasers making patterns in liquids and powders. In 2005, the open source RepRap project was started and the era of 3D printers with spools of hard plastic filament was realized. Today, 3D printing is available for the general public, and is relatively affordable with machines such as the Ender 3 V2.

We are going to start our journey by having an overview of this printer before we level the bed – by far the most important step to get a good 3D print.

We will finish the chapter off with a discussion of the types of materials that we may print with the Ender 3 V2.

In this chapter, we will cover the following topics:

  • Understanding the Creality Ender 3
  • Leveling the print bed
  • Materials available for 3D printing

Technical requirements

In this chapter, we get acquainted with 3D printers. To complete the hands-on portions, we will require the following:

I've been fighting with my 3D printer for several years, but after several hours of reading this book, I have been able to setup my printer so that it prints well enough that I don't need to use any of those special words that I learned in the Army! Would you believe, I've only read three chapters so far? Can't wait to see what else the author has to say.

I use OpenScad and wanted a good reference with better organization and indexing. This was not it, this is too simple.

This book is really poor, just watch the printed examples, it's clear that the author has no clue about 3d printing. Book is introducing external libraries without even trying to catch the standard capabilites. Designed parts are missing specific features needed for stability of FFF additive manufactured objects. Many weird advices for example drilling holes where you clearly see that the printer where author printed parts is not calibrated or does not work at all. Look for example for photos about "3d printed badge" project (Chapter 7) it's a joke, but i cannot paste screen shot in the review. I hope publisher and author will read it to fix that book. But if you are newcomer to openscad, and 3d printing in general, run, you will not learn things in the proper order, and even worst you will see things done wrong. There is much better book regarding openscad, but it's not that one. I do not recommend.

Shortly speaking that book is just waste of time. Clearly author has no clue about openscad and FFF additive manufacturing. Examples are poor, and printed parts demonstrated in the book are just wrong. For example in one chapter you have to design very basic badge, so you can see by yourself the approach there, on the first screenshot you can see the model, and on the second ready print from the book... If you are newbie to openscad and 3d printing you will just learn stuff in a wrong way. Just avoid that, look for other book, there is one, with really good explanation of the topic, where you can learn principles behind the language. Here you have some bunch of basic examples, and quick introduction to the external library without understanding the the things can be done in a different way. Also 3d printed parts are done in a weird way, you can see clearly even having short experience with 3d printing that something is wrong with the author printer. Drilling holes for M3 just because you cannot handle printer? Would be at least good to inform readers about it. Better to fix printer, i hope that in the future if this book will have 2nd edition this will be fixed. But at the moment it's really not worth the money. Especially if you are beginner look for something else, because it's harder to you distinguish between good and bad book. And forget you will understand what is the role of chamfers and fillets from this book... Anyway it's up to you, but wanted to write it, so you will not get trapped. OpenSCAD is amazing language, but look for other book about the topic.
