Microsoft Operations Management Suite Cookbook

Searching and Analyzing OMS Data

In this chapter, we will take a look at the types of data that are collected from the sources that were mentioned in the previous chapter, and learn how to search and analyze the data using the new Azure Log Analytics query language. This new and powerful query language is a feature included in the enhanced Azure Log Analytics service, and it differs significantly from the legacy query language. Readers will learn how to search and analyze data, perform smart analytics, and glean deep, useful, and actionable insights from their collected data. Topics in this chapter include the following:

  • Understanding the Azure Log Analytics query language
  • Working with queries in the Analytics portal
  • Working with visualizations

Introduction

The log search feature enables you to combine, correlate, query, and retrieve data from Log Analytics. Recall that Log Analytics enables you to collect and aggregate large amounts of data from heterogeneous sources; we reviewed some of those capabilities in Chapter 1, Getting Started with Microsoft Operations Management Suite. As mentioned in the previous chapter, the collected data, is only as useful as the insights that can be derived from them, and the subsequent actions that those insights inform. This is where the Log Analytics query language comes to the fore.

The new and improved Log Analytics query language is based on Analytics (codenamed Kusto)—the powerful search feature in Application Insights, which Microsoft has recently made available as an upgrade for Log Analytics workspaces. The Log Analytics query language is optimized to perform and handle...

Understanding the Azure Log Analytics query language

The Log Analytics query language is an interactive query language that enables you to unlock valuable insights from your data by querying, combining, filtering, joining, and performing numerous other operations on your data in Log Analytics.

Getting ready

To work with the Log Analytics query language, you can write search queries from the log search page in Azure Log Analytics. Alternatively, you can use the Analytics portal to write search queries. The Analytics portal is a web tool created expressly for writing and executing Log Analytics queries. It offers a unique environment for working with both simple and advanced analytics, advanced diagnostics, and feature-rich...

Working with queries in the Analytics portal

In this recipe, we will review query writing in more detail, and show how to write basic queries.

Azure Log Analytics queries can start with either a table name or a search command. In either case, a table will always be the reference point because Log Analytics data sources store their data in dedicated tables in a workspace (or in several workspaces). The start of a query must, therefore, define a clear scope for the query.

While search commands are effective, a table-based query is preferable for efficiency, returning the relevant data and providing optimal query performance.

We will review both query types in this recipe.

How to do it...

Let's begin with table-based queries...

Working with visualizations

OMS makes visualizing your indexed and queried data incredibly easy. In the OMS and Log Analytics portals, there's a dedicated view designer feature with which you can create custom views and visualizations of your data. The new Analytics portal for Azure Log Analytics makes available immediate and powerful visualization capabilities for seamless visualization of your queried data.

How to do it...

Perform the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the Azure portal (http://portal.azure.com) and sign in.
  2. In the Azure portal, type Log Analytics in the Search resources search field and select your workspace.
  3. In the Log Analytics blade for your workspace, click the Log Search button to take you to the search...
