DC motors take DC electricity and turn that energy into rotational motion. This is usually achieved through the use of electromagnets that drive the motion as their magnetic fields change. The following illustration shows how the internals of this type of motor appear:

DC motors work great in applications in which you need rotational motion at high speeds. They would be suitable for operating fans or wheels on a remote control car.
