Hands-On Cybersecurity with Blockchain

Security Must Evolve

After understanding most of the critical aspects of the threat landscape, it's time to change the way we look at cybersecurity. The endless variety of malware has the capability of being persistent, hidden, self-destructive, and can bypass traditional security systems by behaving like a legitimate user, making defenders adopt a new security approach to achieve a better cyber posture. In this chapter, we will understand the different approaches adopted by defenders to combat advanced threats and to strengthen cybersecurity systems.

This chapter will introduce some of the most widely used security practices deployed, from network perimeters to server farms. This chapter will also explore insights on the zero-trust security approach and the breach-acceptance security approach.

In this chapter, you will learn about the following topics:

  • The security ecosystem...

The security ecosystem

Thousands of security bodies and security researchers work round the clock to innovate and develop an effective solution to address emerging threats. Organizations spend millions of dollars every year to enhance their security posture and tools. They keep researching zero-day vulnerabilities, building artificial neural networks (ANNs) for endpoint protection, making machine learning models for new threats, building an effective cybersecurity incident response process and awareness program, and so on.

There are four main categories of cyberattack prevention strategies:

  • Reduce the attack surface: Most organizations have a regular process to conduct vulnerability scanning both externally and internally for unwanted application ports, file extension information, and platform information. This continuous process of security threat evaluation...

The zero-trust approach

A widely accepted approach that was initially coined by Forrester is the data-centric approach, which is used by implementing always verify for all data and assets. This was designed to overcome the flat network problem, which helps threat actors move undetected through lateral movements and exfiltrate sensitive and confidential information. This approach also empowers the security pros so that they can regain control of their network and application. Here is how we get started with the zero-trust approach:

  1. Identify and classify sensitive data: In order to protect your data, it's critical to see it. If you are not aware of your sensitive data, the situation may get worse in the post-infection period. Once sensitive data is identified, it's necessary to classify it.
  2. Map the data flow: It is important to get a high level of understanding...

The assume breach approach

Even with growing cyberattack prevention systems, including antivirus, next-generation antivirus, firewall, and next-generation firewall, advanced threats still manage to bypass the security system. None of the security prevention technologies can guarantee complete protection against such threats. In the past few years, organizations have adopted a new approach called assume breach, which is a way of testing their incident response force.

The assume breach mindset allows organizations to be open to various security solutions and services, as follows:

  • Red-team exercise: Red-team exercise is the enhanced version of penetration testing where the exercise is performed by a team of highly professional security experts, not just to find vulnerabilities, but to also test the detection and incident response capabilities of the organization. This helps...

Evolution at the foundation layer

We had a leaky boat structure, and, in spite of fixing it, we are simply making this faster and smarter boat load more and more unnecessary resources. It's time to try changing the entire boat structure and see how well we can thrive.

The entirety of cybersecurity is for protecting a computer network that runs on the TCP/IP model and uses the client-server database architecture. The authority to modify data remains with the centralized server, which authenticates each client before allowing them to access the database. As there is only one server authority for regulation and maintenance, if that is compromised, all the data can be altered, exfiltrated, or even deleted. The majority of data-breach incidents are basically an effect and risk of having a centralized server database on the cloud. As we go on to the next chapter, you will learn...

Summary

In this chapter, you learned about how security experts are exploring innovation in the world of cybersecurity. You also learned about some of the most effective and widely used security approaches and mindsets. At the end, we got to glance at the security challenges at the foundation layer that are rarely addressed. In the next chapter, you will learn about blockchain, building blocks, working, and its role in industrial technology.

Questions

The evolution of a security system is a never-ending process, and it will always open a scope for improvement and integration:

  1. What are the challenges in adopting the zero-trust approach
  2. What are the challenges in adopting the breach-assume approach?
  3. Why haven't centralized database risks been covered so far?

Key benefits

  • • Understanding the blockchain technology from the cybersecurity perspective
  • • Developing cyber security solutions with Ethereum blockchain technology
  • • Understanding real-world deployment of blockchain based applications

Description

Blockchain technology is being welcomed as one of the most revolutionary and impactful innovations of today. Blockchain technology was first identified in the world’s most popular digital currency, Bitcoin, but has now changed the outlook of several organizations and empowered them to use it even for storage and transfer of value. This book will start by introducing you to the common cyberthreat landscape and common attacks such as malware, phishing, insider threats, and DDoS. The next set of chapters will help you to understand the workings of Blockchain technology, Ethereum and Hyperledger architecture and how they fit into the cybersecurity ecosystem. These chapters will also help you to write your first distributed application on Ethereum Blockchain and the Hyperledger Fabric framework. Later, you will learn about the security triad and its adaptation with Blockchain. The last set of chapters will take you through the core concepts of cybersecurity, such as DDoS protection, PKI-based identity, 2FA, and DNS security. You will learn how Blockchain plays a crucial role in transforming cybersecurity solutions. Toward the end of the book, you will also encounter some real-world deployment examples of Blockchain in security cases, and also understand the short-term challenges and future of cybersecurity with Blockchain.

Who is this book for?

The book is targeted towards security professionals, or any stakeholder dealing with cybersecurity who wants to understand the next-level of securing infrastructure using Blockchain. Basic understanding of Blockchain can be an added advantage.

What you will learn

  • • Understand the cyberthreat landscape
  • • Learn about Ethereum and Hyperledger Blockchain
  • • Program Blockchain solutions

First, the good points: the topics on cybersecurity are well written, and it was interesting for me to see common security issues as well as defend mechanisms outlined and explained.Sadly, the code examples in this book are not useful at all. The author is providing only a glimpse of the needed information and implementation details. I looked forward to the hands-on part the most, only to see that the few and poor code samples are not useful at all. Very disappointing at that end, not worth to be named a "Hands-On".

The title is VERY misleading. This book not about Blockchain Security as the title says. It is copy-paste what general security is (internet/Wikipedia) and what Blockchain, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Hyperledger.I wasted $ but thankfully realized just by glancing at the book in 2 hours it was a waste of 2 hours (nothing new, nor even specific to blockchain security.About me: IT security professional with 20+ years of experience and a Ph.D. in Cryptography + CISSP + CISA working in blockchain DLT security for the last 5 years.

this book only reiterates existing security concepts for 90% of the time and 10% makes obvious remarks about blockchain, the code examples don't work since the book is missing critical information or code to complete them.

This is a good book as a ready reference although there are contradictions in the book about Ethereum. In some places it states that Ethereum uses proof of stake and in others it states that it uses proof of work for consensus. Although this is a very cutting edge field so I can see how the information is changing faster than people can write books. Other than a few confusing concepts, I would recommend this book if you need to get up to speed on cybersecurity using blockchain. The next addition will hopefully be 5 stars because I like the concept and the structure.

Wearing my security manager’s hat (well, I would, but I haven’t occupied that particular vocational niche for many years, so I don’t have one), I know Security on the Information Superhighway ’ a useful resource (especially as a source of useful citation, if less groundbreaking. Also with this book Mr.Rajneesh has done full justice by explaining blockchain with cybersecurity, being security expert I could very much relate with the said topic for me this book interested me to learn more about blockchain and cybersecurity. Kudos !!
