Storage key concepts

In this section, we are going to introduce some terms and architectural concepts that are essential to fully understand how storage costs work in the cloud.

Let’s set the ball rolling by explaining the three main storage technologies that are used, as well as their advantages and the most suitable use cases for each one of them.

Types of storage in the cloud

There are mainly three types of Cloud Storage that you can choose from, depending on the use case:

Block storage: This is analogous to Storage Area Network (SAN) or Direct Attached Storage (DAS) storage. Data is stored in the form of blocks and offers low latency and really good performance. It is used for virtual machines at a higher cost than other storage types.
File storage: This offers the possibility to access storage through a shared filesystem or a file share with different clients. It works similarly to Network-Attached Storage (NAS) devices with common protocols such as...
