Chapter 7: Mapping the Current State (VSM Step 4)
In the two preceding chapters, you learned the purpose of value stream management (VSM) and how to plan a VSM initiative. We’re now going to get into the details of the type of analysis performed during a VSM initiative. Specifically, you will learn how to create value stream maps to describe your current processes. This is Step 4 in our eight-step VSM methodology.
While it may be tempting to jump right in and start work to implement changes to eliminate perceived areas of waste, the problem is that, without proper analysis, your efforts may not get the results you and your VSM team expect. Without a current state value stream map, you may not be aware of the system-wide impacts associated with your current value stream activities.
