Past, present, and future
The concept of information security can be traced back through the history of controlling information, as this has always been paramount. It needs no examples. Since the early days of the computer's existence, the need for securing the information they manage has been brought forward and has gone through an evolutionary process in the way we secure information and the mechanisms that handle and process information. One of the oldest examples that we can look at is the way the Roman dictator Julius Caesar secured his message transmissions. He used a form of transmitting encrypted information to his generals on the battlefield, which was impossible to decode by his enemies at the time.
