Implications of Multilayer Protocols
With IP networks becoming ubiquitous and inexpensive, the list of all the things that cannot be run over a modern IP network would be shorter than all the things that are now run over an IP network. As was mentioned earlier, the OSI model makes possible the transmission of just about anything from voice, video, and block-level traffic to supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) traffic over a regular IP network. The disadvantage of these applications was the requirement for their own network and equipment and the associated costs. The advantage, however, was that these networks were all separated instead of being interconnected into one giant Internet of Things (IoT), which is what is currently used.
