Description

Titanium Mobile has quickly become the platform of choice for many mobile developers and is growing and changing at a rapid rate. From the implementation of CommonJS, Cloud Services, MVC design patterns and more, the last year in Titanium development has been a roller coaster of change for the better. Augmented Reality is a hot area for mobile applications and this book along with the augmentedTi open source application will give a great start to all augmented applications. This book will show you how to build an Augmented Reality application, which is clean, efficient and usable. It shows how to hide the processing from the user and build a display which updates and rotates smoothly.Mobile devices have got more powerful, but they still have limitations. Augmented Reality applications test these devices to breaking point and without the correct coding techniques make the applications unresponsive and cumbersome. This book gives a solution, which will enable you to build an effective application, and is accompanied by a complete working application and source code. It's essential for anybody who is creating a multiple points of interest augmented reality application. It shows how to build this type of application efficiently and takes into consideration the devices limitations and processing capabilities.

Who is this book for?

This book is for anybody who wishes to understand how to build an Augmented Reality Application. It uses the Appcelerator Titanium mobile development framework, but the techniques and practices can be applied to other frameworks and native code. You will need to have a good working knowledge of development and JavaScript, it is not aimed at the beginner.

What you will learn

  • Getting current location of devices
  • Obtaining and displaying the data relevant to the current location
  • Calculating the distance between two points
  • Scaling images based on distance
  • Titanium common JS application architecture
  • Handling device processing limitations
  • Understanding the pitfalls in developing Augmented Reality applications

Over the holidays I had a chance to read Trevor's new book "Augmented Reality using Appcelerator Titanium Starter". Although I was a technical reviewer this was my first chance to read the completed book cover to cover. This book is a must have for any Titanium developer looking to explore Augmented Reality. If you are just getting started with Titanium this book has a ton of recipes to help get you started. My favorite section was the discussion on how to handle the views which draw the different location elements. This is a fresh approach on handling performance issues often related to rapidly moving views. Just as interesting was the discussions related to the different location algorithms. Even experienced Titanium developers will find new useful snippets to take away from the author's code.If you are new to Titanium development you might want to check out Appcelerator's Getting Started Guides first, as the author focuses his time on discussing the complexities of the augmentedTi app instead of setup topics.

If you aren't familiar with Augmented Reality, it's the fancy phrase for adding meta-information to the real-life objects around you. Have you ever been to the top of a very high point and read the signage that names those objects in the distance and how far away they were? Used the signs on a golf course that tell you how far away the pin is? That's a form of augmented reality. This book lays out a solution to write smartphone apps that augment the reality around you. The solution provided has been coded using the Appcelerator Titanium Framework which means the app will work on Android and iPhones as well as mobile browsers. The author says it can be applied to most other frameworks and native solutions, but so much of the implementation details is taken care of by the Titanium Framework that you'd have to do a lot of work unless whatever alternative framework you choose has the same functionality as Titanium. Before reading this book I would have guessed that writing any such app would be incredibly difficult, but Mr. Ward does a nice job of breaking down what APIs are available and how to use them. The device's camera is used as a view of reality and its compass, level and accelerometer to determine where you are and where you're looking. The book's example uses the Google Places API to pull in the interesting data it wants to show on the screen, though this is probably the part you'll need to provide for your custom application. The hardest part of implementing the solution was getting my copy of Appcelerator up-to-date, pulling the source down from Git, and setting up the Google API. I actually bailed on getting the source from Git and pulled it down from the book's page on Packt Publishing's website. This is mentioned right away in the ForeWord and is true: This book assumes you know some JavaScript already. It is not a JavaScript tutorial though you will pick up some Javascript best practices by studying the code. It's very well written (no application-level global variables are used and each part of the application is split into its own module or set of modules) and well documented, so any experienced developer should be able to run with these ideas.I really enjoyed the mathematical discussion of how to calculate the positioning of the blips on the screen, given your current GPS setting and bearing. I think a complete book could be written on the various alternative methods for accomplishing this and discussing the trade offs of accuracy vs. speed and processor utilization. Titanium makes all of this almost too simple with its built in functions for acquiring position and calculating distances. This book is a fat-free 52 pages and reads more like a research whitepaper on some best practices for implementing a solution as a launching point for your own apps than an exhaustive treatise on the subject. Having written a similar paper recently I understand that you cannot walk through every conceivable possible usage of this technology, and I appreciate the author's willingness to trust the reader's intelligence and creativity rather than spell out every possibility in detail.Developers looking for a quick leg-up on writing Augmented Reality apps would be well served to pick up this book. The author has thought deeply about the problems and solutions involved and will save you a ton of frustration.

The content is interesting as well as some tips, however due new changes in Titanium Studio and other libraries, like the Facebook connect, do not allow the reader to test the sample application mentioned in the book.

If you have any feedback about the product you're reading, or Early Access in general, then please fill out a contact form here and we'll make sure the feedback gets to the right team.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

Just find the course you want to buy, go through the check-out steps, and you’ll get a confirmation email from us with information and a link to the relevant Early Access courses.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
