ASP.NET Core 3 and React

Section 1: Getting Started

This section provides a high-level introduction to ASP.NET Core and React and how to create projects that enable them to work well together. We will create the project for the app that we'll build throughout this book, which will allow users to submit questions and other users to submit answers to them—a Q&A app.

This section comprises the following chapters:

  • Chapter 1, Understanding the ASP.NET Core React Template
  • Chapter 2, Creating Decoupled React and ASP.NET Core Apps

Key benefits

  • Explore the full potential and latest features of .NET Core 3.0, TypeScript 3, and React
  • Learn how to manage data, application design, and packaging, and secure your web apps
  • Discover best practices for using React and TypeScript to build a scalable frontend that interacts with REST APIs

Description

Microsoft's ASP.NET Core is a robust and high-performing cross-platform web API framework, and Facebook's React uses declarative JavaScript to drive a rich, interactive user experience on the client-side web. Together, they can be used to build full stack apps with enhanced security and scalability at each layer. This book will start by taking you through React and TypeScript components to build an intuitive single-page application. You’ll understand how to design scalable REST APIs that can integrate with a React-based frontend. You’ll get to grips with the latest features, popular patterns, and tools available in the React ecosystem, including function-based components, React Router, and Redux. The book shows how you can use TypeScript along with React to make the frontend robust and maintainable. You’ll then cover important .NET Core features such as API controllers, attribute routing, and model binding to help you build a sturdy backend. Additionally, you’ll explore API security with ASP.NET Core identity and authorization policies, and write reliable unit tests using both .NET Core and React before you deploy your app to the Azure cloud. By the end of the book, you’ll have gained all the knowledge you need to enhance your C# and JavaScript skills and build full stack, production-ready applications with ASP.NET Core and React.

Who is this book for?

If you’re a web developer looking to build solid full-stack web applications with .NET Core and React, this book is for you. Although this book does not assume any knowledge of React, you’re expected to have a basic understanding of .NET Core.

What you will learn

  • Build RESTful APIs with .NET Core using API controllers
  • Create strongly typed, interactive, and function-based React components using Hooks
  • Build forms efficiently using reusable React components
  • Perform client-side state management with Redux and the React Context API
  • Secure REST APIs with ASP.NET identity and authorization policies
  • Run a range of automated tests on the frontend and backend
  • Implement continuous integration (CI) and continuous delivery (CD) processes into Azure using Azure DevOps

For a programmer with some experience, this book is a great way to get up to speed on ASP.NET Core, React and related tech. The book builds on the same single-page app throughout, and there is a nice progression over the chapters, with new concepts introduced at every turn. Each chapter ends with a summary and some questions on the content, a great way to reinforce your learning.

The book begins with a good introduction to ASP.NET Core and React. It builds up a step-by-step flow for application development by covering topics such as the development of frontend and RESTful API, building a backend to interact with the SQL server database, and finalize the project by adding automated tests to both Core and React apps. It is an ideal book for anyone who's looking into gaining hands-on knowledge on Core and React app by building a project.

I got this book from another place, but anyway want to make a recommendation for it. It is a all-in one book, that will teach you TypeScript, React and asp.net core building a real world application. Topics are introduced in a great sequence, building on top of each other. The example of a Questions and Answers app is great. This is one of the few technical books that you will enjoy reading from cover to cover. Kudos to the author. This is for beginners, but it will give you an incredible solid foundation, it makes everything easy to learn and follow. Very pleased!! Highly recommended

The topic of the book is good and there are a lot of good ideas by the author. However, following along with the sample code is much too problematic. There are syntax errors and generally the code does not always compile. Instead of learning, I spend as much time dealing with sample code that does not work. This is after downloading the code samples directly. One of the code segments had incorrect punctuation preventing the code to work. I am sure it is hard for an author to see issues with their own code, so this is where the pre-release reviewing process should come into play.

I already have plenty of .NET experience, but I picked this book up as a way to tie my existing skills in with what I have been learning of React over the past year or so. This book takes you through the full stack of building out a React application with a .NET Core backend, which is great! There are issues here and there that would have benefitted from a little proofreading. Some of the code samples in the book aren't 100% correct, but that's not terribly uncommon with these books. For the most part, it's nothing too derailing. Here's my issue: I am currently on Chapter 9: Creating a Real-Time API with SignalR and the code for this chapter just completely forgets that you had ripped out the component-level state management a few chapters ago in favor of managing state with Redux. I was pretty excited to get an intro to SignalR - something I haven't used up to this point - but now this entire chapter is worthless to me and the rest of the book is a huge question mark. When I come across learning material that does this kind of thing I usually trash it and move on to something else. What's even more frustrating is the code in GitHub (which is still actively maintained) reflects this oversight. It's incredibly frustrating that the author structured this book as each chapter and concept building on the previous chapters and concepts only to treat a chapter in the dead middle of the book as if each chapter is being written in a vacuum.
