What is the Internet of Things?

The IoT is changing the way we travel, purchase items, and provide energy to structures. According to BI Intelligence, the IoT can be defined as, "a network of internet-connected objects able to collect and exchange data." Complex sensors and chips are embedded in devices or things that surround us every day. These sensors and chips collect data from the devices. The data generated from the device is sent to a gateway, which sends it to the internet. The data is then sent to a storage location like a cloud server to be analyzed. After the analytics process, the refined data is sent to an IoT application. The applications use the data to address industry specific needs. IoT platforms provide a common language for sensors and actuators embedded in devices to communicate with IoT applications. Many platforms use cloud technology to integrate data from many devices.
