This review may be a little premature, since I'm only 70 pages into this book of 753 pages. However, what I've seen so far is that the author has taken care to write in a very clear and thorough way. Things are explained well, and in an easy to understand manner. I'm not ever left with the thought of "What the hell was meant by that?" or, "Doesn't the author know that this statement can be interpreted in more than one way?", or worse yet, "Didn't they have anyone proof-read this book before they published it?" These are thoughts that I get in the vast majority of books I read on technical topics like this, but not this one. My thanks to the author, Neil Smyth, for restoring a little bit of faith in the human race. Once I have had an opportunity to read through more of this text, I hope to come back and update this review with my feelings at that time. I hope they continue to report that the rest of the book is as good as the first 70 pages. By the way, I like this book so much that I plan on obtaining the Kotlin edition of this same book.

Gostei muito da didática do livro. Ensina de forma fluída, diferentes de alguns outros livros que chega a ser um pouco 'maçante'.

Only downside to a book like this (version 3,5) is that in the few months I have owned it, we are now on 4.0 - it seems dead trees are not the best medium for conveying knowledge. Oh but - it comes with a downloadable PDF version too.

I was looking for a book that did more than treat Android development as a coding tutorial. I wanted something that would help me understand how Android hangs together, where I should be plugging in, what design patterns I can use and which ones I should avoid, how different patterns have been expanded by Android itself. This book delivers on that in spades. The result is that you spend quite a lot of time early in the book needing to understand the theory and architecture. The author does a good job of walking you through the architecture and then illustrating how it applies with solid code examples. That said, there are tons of examples where the writing style is kind of annoying. Statements starting with "Clearly..." when it is not clear, or "... is comprised of..." when the appropriate English is "... consists of..." show a lack of good editorial support. With decades of Java/C#/C++ experience writing code with J2EE, Spring, Eclipse RCP, Entity Framework, MFC, RogueWave and other major API's, I knew I needed something that was going to give me an idea of how to work with rather than against Android. This book does that well.I bought this book and then realized I had updated to Android Studio 3.6. There are some significant differences in the UI, and some of the templates have been updated. I had enough background to work through that, but it will make for a gap for someone who is new to Android Studio. All said, this book is not a light read. You need to take the time to read it and try it and write the sample code yourself to understand it. If you are willing to invest the time, it is well worth the effort. Very solid book to learn from.
