I had the opportunity to read and now review Packt's Mastering Linux Administration by Alexandru Calcatinge. This book is a well-organized and practical guide for anyone aiming to advance their Linux skills, packed with clear, step-by-step explanations. It covers everything from basic system setup to advanced topics like network configuration, security hardening, and server management, the book is (Please note it is assumed that the reader already knows how to install a Linux OS, and has the tools to do so.)Calcatinge’s ability to break down complex topics like the Linux kernel, process management, and system services (_systemd_, _crontab_) makes the material approachable yet thorough. The writing is straightforward and engaging, with each chapter building logically on the last. The hands-on exercises are designed to reinforce the theory covered in each chapter, helping readers solidify their understanding through practical application. These exercises range from simple tasks like configuring a network interface, to more advanced labs such as setting up a secure web server using Apache or Ngin with SSL/TLS encryption. Each exercise is well-explained, with clear steps that mirror real-world tasks a Linux administrator would encounter. One particularly valuable aspect of the exercises is how they challenge the reader to think critically. Instead of simply walking through rote procedures, many exercises include troubleshooting scenarios that require problem-solving, which is essential for anyone aiming to excel in Linux administration.Overall, Mastering Linux Administration is an essential resource for both beginners and seasoned professionals. Its combination of clear explanations and practical exercises makes it a must-read for anyone serious about attempting to master Linux administration.

This book is, in my opinion, pretty impressive; set into four major parts or sections, it really does cover the key things a modern Linux sysadmin must know. The book begins (Part 1) with a gentle learning curve – to all things a budding Linux sysadmin might require to know. Part 2 then moves you into a bit of deeper detail – on learning about and managing filesystems, the network, Bash scripting (with practical examples), and even securing a modern Linux system. I learned new stuff here: about Disaster Recovery Planning (DRP), and more on SELinux and AppArmor!Cloud-based sysadmin techniques, including working with Linux’s powerful KVM hypervisor, and managing containers with Docker, form the next major part (Part 3).Part 4 of the book is a wholly devoted to modern cloud administration tech on Linux. It begins with an introduction to cloud computing, which covers the now well-known (at least it should be!) [X]aaS solutions, DevOps, and common cloud management tools (including Ansible and Puppet). The book then goes further! - the last two chapters get into the details of (the very popular) Kubernetes app deployment and automation with Ansible. The book’s GitHub site has all the source-level code examples and config fragments. All in all, a great read for budding as well as experienced Linux sysadmin’s / users on a modern Linux (cloud) environment.

You can tell this was written by someone with some real experience, and the best part is its written without the extra fluff. Its to the point, informational, but well written for the reader to understand. This should go on every Linux admins shelf.
