Remote Monitoring Challenges
Remote monitoring is fundamental to autonomous operations, and plays a significant role in business continuity and predicting failure scenarios and mitigating them. This chapter will focus on really remote situations and making decisions about bandwidth concerns, power consumption, and the volume of data being transmitted. Our focus will be on working with data acquisition in remote or isolated locations, as often faced by industries such as renewable energy and oil and gas. We will examine different options for data transfer, such as 5G, satellite, and long-range wireless options.
Through the aid of two case studies, we would like to drive home the system considerations, design decisions, compromises, technology selection, and processes the architect must undertake while working on remote monitoring applications.
