Understanding Azure Disk Storage
Azure disks provide block-level storage primarily intended for VMs (such as an application server you may deploy with Windows Server 2022). They present varying levels of performance on Azure depending on your requirements and choice of Stock-Keeping Unit (SKU). Azure disks are designed to support both Windows and Linux operating systems in standalone or clustered deployments.
Disk Management Options
Azure offers the ability to either manage disks yourself (with you taking on the administrative burden) or subscribe to a managed disk option (where you don’t need to be involved in the complexity of managing your storage for scale). As of 30 January 2024, you can no longer provision unmanaged disks, as the functionality of managed disks has replaced and enhanced the capabilities of the offering.
