Using Azure Recovery Services vault to manage, back up, and restore files and folders
Now, let’s switch focus to the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent or the Azure Backup Agent. Previously, we learned that we could back up files, folders, and system state from both on-premises machines and Azure VMs with this agent in use as part of Microsoft Azure Backup Server. This agent is meant to be lightweight without the overhead of MABS while still storing backup data in an Azure Recovery Services vault. Later in this chapter, we will cover using the Azure Backup extension for Azure VMs. The subtle difference between the extension versus the MARS agent is that the agent can handle specific files and folders on the VM, whereas the extension backs up the entire VM. This means that file and folder-level recovery will require both components to be configured on Azure VMs.
