In a nutshell, VPNs are a way for remote users to connect to the company's network in a secure fashion. A tunnel would be created encapsulating the data using some sort of security protocols. The packets should not be sniffed out.
This technology has really picked up, since lots of people are working from home and you can connect to the company's resources as if you were right at your desk.
Companies can use VPNs internally, but that is not what they are made for. They are for WANs. When you must traverse the dangerous waters of the internet, you should create VLANs. That way, we can pass information securely, to a certain degree.
