Azure for Architects

Azure Solution Availability and Scalability

Architectural concerns, such as high availability and scalability, are some of the highest-priority items for any architect. This is common across many projects and solutions. However, this becomes even more important when deploying applications on the cloud because of the complexity involved. Most of the time, the complexity does not come from the application, but because of the choices available in terms of similar resources on the cloud. The other complex issue that arises from the cloud is the constant availability of newer features. These new features can almost make an architect's architectural decisions completely redundant in hindsight.

In this chapter, we will go through an architect's perspective for deploying highly available, scalable applications on Azure.

Azure is a mature platform providing multiple options for...

High availability

High availability is one of the major architectural concerns for any architect. It forms one of the core non-functional technical requirements for any serious service and its deployment. High availability refers to the feature of a service or application that keeps it operational on a continuous basis, meeting or surpassing its promised defined service level agreement (SLA). Users are promised a certain SLA based on service type. The service should be available for consumption based on its SLA. For example, an SLA can have 99% availability for an application for the entire year. This means it should be available for consumption by users for 361.35 days. If it becomes less than this, this constitutes a breach of the SLA. Most mission-critical applications define their high-availability SLA with five nines for a year. This means the application should be up, running...

Azure high availability

Achieving high availability and meeting high SLA requirements is tough. Azure provides lots of features that enable high availability for applications, from the host and guest operating system to applications using its PaaS. Architects can use these features to get high availability in their applications using configuration instead of building these features from scratch or being dependent on third-party tools.

In this section, we will look at the features and capabilities provided by Azure to make applications highly available. Before we get into the architectural and configuration details, it is important to understand Azure's high-availability, related concepts.

Concepts

The fundamental concepts...

Architectural considerations for high availability

Azure provides High availability to various means and at various levels. High availability could be at data center level, it could be at a region level, or across Azure. In this section, we will go through some of the architectures for high availability.

High availability within Azure regions

The architecture shown next shows high-availability deployment within a single Azure region. High availability is designed at the individual resource level. In this architecture, as shown in the following diagram, there are multiple VMs at each tier connected through either an application gateway or load balancer, and they are part of an availability set. Each tier is associated with...

Scalability

Running applications and systems that are available to users for consumption is important for architects of any serious application. However, there is another equally important application feature that is one of the top priorities for architects, and this is the scalability of the application.

Imagine a situation in which an application is deployed and obtains great performance and availability with a few users, but both availability and performance degrades as the number of users start begins to increase. There are times when an application under normal load performs well, but degrades in performance with the increase in the number of users. This can happen if there is a sudden increase in the number of users and the environment is not built for such a large number of users.

To accommodate such spikes in the number of users, you might provision the hardware and bandwidth...

Upgrades and maintenance

After VMSS and applications are deployed, they need to be actively maintained. Planned maintenance should be conducted periodically to ensure that both the environment and application is up to date with the latest features, and the environment is current from a security and resilience point of view.

Upgrades can be associated with applications, the guest VM instance, or the image itself. Upgrades can be quite complex because they should happen without affecting the availability, scalability, and performance of environments and applications. To ensure that updates can take place one instance at a time using rolling upgrade methods, it is important that VMSS supports and provides capabilities for these advanced scenarios.

There is a utility provided by the Azure team to manage updates for VMSS. It's a Python-based utility that can be downloaded from...

Summary

High availability and scalability are important and crucial architectural concerns. Almost every application and every architect tries to implement high availability. Azure is a mature platform that understands the need for these architectural concerns in applications and provides resources to implement them at multiple levels. These architectural concerns are not an afterthought, and should be part of the application life cycle development, starting from the planning phase itself.

  • Get to know the security best practices for your Azure deployment

Description

Over the years, Azure cloud services have grown quickly, and the number of organizations adopting Azure for their cloud services is also gradually increasing. Leading industry giants are finding that Azure fulfills their extensive cloud requirements. Azure for Architects – Second Edition starts with an extensive introduction to major designing and architectural aspects available with Azure. These design patterns focus on different aspects of the cloud, such as high availability, security, and scalability. Gradually, we move on to other aspects, such as ARM template modular design and deployments. This is the age of microservices and serverless is the preferred implementation mechanism for them. This book covers the entire serverless stack available in Azure including Azure Event Grid, Azure Functions, and Azure Logic Apps. New and advance features like durable functions are discussed at length. A complete integration solution using these serverless technologies is also part of the book. A complete chapter discusses all possible options related to containers in Azure including Azure Kubernetes services, Azure Container Instances and Registry, and Web App for Containers. Data management and integration is an integral part of this book that discusses options for implementing OLTP solutions using Azure SQL, Big Data solutions using Azure Data factory and Data Lake Storage, eventing solutions using stream analytics, and Event Hubs. This book will provide insights into Azure governance features such as tagging, RBAC, cost management, and policies. By the end of this book, you will be able to develop a full-?edged Azure cloud solution that is Enterprise class and future-ready.

this is not an architect book in my personal view, i term an architect as someone who does top down systems design and partitions, structures and balances a wide range of complex considerations including scale, performance, reliability, quality, flexibility and extensibility (just for starters). as an intro book to configuring a good number of Azure components and services it's pretty good, but doesn't explain much and jumps straight to screen shots in very low res of admin panels. why they aren't better resolution and annotated is beyond me.

No matter how good or bad the contents of this book are; the quality of the editing and proofreading leave a LOT to be desired. The content itself is ok but by no means true architect material. A telltale sign is the sheer number of screenshots and code snippets that low quality publishers use to pad out the number of pages in books. If you are an architect you are not interested in step by step instructions on how to configure stuff, that should be left to books dealing with implementation. The book is very light on actual architectural advice: it lists all the options but does not really go into how to adopt these to requirements.Unfortunately there are very few books dealing with azure on an architectural level so this may be as good as any.I guess if you can live through bad English, redundant content, unreadable diagrams and lots of screenshots and code snippets this book does give an overview of azure and how the various components of the platform work together.
