What is a block theme?

In simple terms, a block theme is simply a theme that is created using WordPress blocks. You edit this theme within the Site Editor. These types of themes have been supported since version 5.9.

It is worth stating that other names have been used for block themes, so you might find documentation about full site themes that refers to them as editor themes. A lot of these concepts were new, and as the language was forming, several different terms were used.

We used block themes when showing examples such as Twenty Twenty-Four and using features such as template parts. Typically, a block theme doesn’t just come with Styles; it also has template parts and templates – all the full features unlocked within a Site Editor. They also come with patterns and, often, block style variations, unlocking all the new functionality within one theme.
