Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V Cookbook

Chapter 2. Migrating and Upgrading Physical and Virtual Servers

In this chapter, we will cover the following recipes:

  • Performing an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016
  • Exporting and importing virtual machines
  • Migrating virtual machines and updating their Integration Services
  • Migrating virtual machines using Cross Version Shared Nothing Live Migration
  • Migrating virtual machine storage using storage migration
  • Converting VHD files to VHDX
  • Upgrading the VM configuration version
  • Converting physical computers to virtual machines

Introduction

Microsoft has excelled once again with Windows Server 2016 and its new version of Hyper-V. There are new and exciting features, such as Nested Virtualization, Nano Server, Shielded VMs, Production Checkpoints, and many more exciting features that focus on improving the virtualization experience, increasing mobility, scalability, and reliability of your datacenters. With all of them together, we can now say that Windows Server 2016 provides the ultimate cloud platform. This means that you will have much more flexibility, automation, and better management experience of virtual and physical servers in creating your hybrid cloud infrastructure.

Having said that, the migration plan of the existing environment will still need to happen. You will probably want to start using all these features right away. However, the upgrade process needs attention, planning, and special configurations.

With Hyper-V version 5, virtual machines, upgrades, and migrations are even easier than they were...

Performing an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016

One of the easiest ways to adopt Windows Server 2016 in an existing environment is via an in-place upgrade mechanism. You might have a scenario with a relatively fresh installation of Windows Server 2012 R2 with Hyper-V, where you want to update to Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V on the same hardware. In cases where you have Hyper-V running with all the applications, drivers, and hardware on the host computer being supported on a Windows Server 2016 platform, you can use the in-place upgrade option for upgrading. This will guarantee that your host computer will be easily upgraded to Windows Server 2016 with all the configuration and files preserved.

However, in cases where applications, drivers, or even hardware might not work on Windows Server 2016, or the old installation of Windows Server 2012 R2 has had lots of modifications caused by uninstalled applications, the best way would be via migration to a new operating...

Exporting and importing virtual machines

If you don't want to perform an in-place upgrade from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016, the migration from an old Hyper-V version to Windows Server 2016 is not so complicated either. One option to consider, especially for VMs that run in an isolated environment, is to use export and import to migrate these VMs.

You need to install a new server with Windows Server 2016, enable the Hyper-V role, export the virtual machine from the old server, and import them back to your new server. That's it! This is the same process that we have been using since the first version of Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 but with a fairly recent twist.

Earlier versions of Hyper-V had some limitations, for example, you could import only a virtual machine that had been exported before and there were lots of other issues regarding different configurations in the source and destination host that could trip you up.

The next few steps will guide you through...

Migrating virtual machines and updating their Integration Services

Most people think that the process to migrate a virtual machine from one host that is running a previous version of Hyper-V, to another one with a newer version, is simply done by the export and import process, as shown in the previous task. In the past this would have been wrong, but this is the experience that Microsoft wants to provide for Windows Server 2016. During previous migrations, you may have noticed some strange behavior in the VMs you migrated, such as mouse integration, slow performance, and some other issues.

With Windows Server 2016, Microsoft has changed its strategy when it comes to Integration Services, no longer are the Integration Service versions so heavily matched to the host version. The focus is now on applying updates to the VM if there is a requirement to update the VM. This has the added benefit that the person responsible for managing the Hyper-V host isn't necessarily responsible for updating...

Migrating virtual machine using Cross Version Shared Nothing Live Migration

Cross Version Shared Nothing Live Migration provides you with the capability to migrate your VMs to a Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V host, via nothing more than a shared network, without the VMs experiencing any downtime. The nice thing about Cross Version Shared Nothing Live Migration, is that it provides a mechanism to non-disruptively upgrade your Hyper-V host.

Note

You should know that under certain circumstances, that this is a one-way migration path, when migrating directly from a Windows 2012 host to Windows 2016 or when the VM configuration version has been upgraded from version 5.0 to version 7.0, using Update-VMVersion as a post Windows 2016 migration activity. Cross Version Shared Nothing Live Migration only allows for live migration in the opposite direction if the Hyper-V host is running Windows 2012 R2.

Given the increased cadence around the Windows operating system, Microsoft introduced features like Cross...

Migrating virtual machine storage using Storage Migration

In a hybrid cloud environment, with thousands of physical and virtual servers, it is normal to face some problems or limitations that require reallocating a virtual machine to another location.

Let's list some examples of the issues you might encounter:

  • Hardware limitation
  • Storage upgrade and maintenance
  • Poor VM performance (I/O)
  • Configuration mistakes

Windows Server 2016 Hyper-V includes a feature to help you in these scenarios called storage migration, providing the ability to reallocate the virtual machine storage while it's running.

This recipe will walk through all the details and steps to show you how to move the virtual machine storage using the storage migration.

Getting ready

The storage migration feature copies the current storage to the destination location, but it keeps the source files until the migration completes. Make sure that you have enough disk space when reallocating the VM storage within the same partition...

This is a great book if you have a server background and want to get started with Windows Server Hyper-V. This is the Kindle version. While I really love the Kindle for reading fiction, I find it clumsy and frustrating to use the Kindle for technical books - especially those with diagrams. Unfortunately, the book is out of print already, so I did not have the option to buy the printed version.

As always, excellent book! In fact, a full course of Hyper-V.I doubt anyone goes through that book and does not feel tempted to buy it. It serves as a quick reference or even a complete study!Congratulations to the author and publisher for the excellent work.I have an IT school in Brazil and I tell you: Do not waste any time with other books, this is your ideal choice!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon
