Building Your Game

As we start on our journey of building mobile games using the Unity game engine, it’s important that you are familiar with the engine itself before we dive into the specifics of building things for mobile platforms. Although there is a chance that you’ve already built a game and want to transition it to mobile, there will also be those of you who haven’t touched Unity before or may not have used it in a long time. This chapter will act as an introduction to newcomers and a refresher for those coming back, and it will provide some best practices for those who are already familiar with Unity. While you may skip this chapter if you’re already familiar with Unity, I think it’s also a good idea to go through the project so that you know the thought processes behind why the project is made in the way that it is, so that you can keep it in mind for your own future titles.

In this chapter, we will build a 3D endless runner game in the same vein as Imangi Studios LLC’s Temple Run series. In our case, we will have a player who will run continuously in a certain direction and dodge the obstacles that are in their way. We can also add additional features to the game easily, as the game will endlessly have new things added to it.

This chapter will be split into several topics. It will contain simple, step-by-step processes for you to follow. Here is an outline of our tasks:

  • Setting up the project
  • Creating the player
  • Moving the player through a C# script
  • Improving scripts using attributes and XML comments
  • Update function versus FixedUpdate function
  • Having the camera follow our player
  • Creating a basic tile
  • Making the game endless
  • Creating obstacles

Technical requirements

This book utilizes Unity 2022.1.0b14 and Unity Hub 3.3.1, but the steps should work with minimal changes in future versions of the editor. From the diagrams to the explanations provided throughout this textbook is an excellent resource for those looking to start on Mobile Games through Unity Engine. A strong understanding of the engine is established initially, so the shift to the mobile game focus is seamless. Context is provided thoroughly with syntax and word choice so there is no confusion when you begin your project. The solid foundation built of optimization, model placement, project management, and platform choice make this text great for beginners to start or advanced users to keep sharp. Would highly recommend a purchase from anyone!!

I was absolutely floored by this book. I am new to learning Unity and I am currently learning the basics of C#. As a 35 year old man with no prior coding knowledge outside of Myspace back in 2007 I am very surprised by how well I was able to keep up. By time I reached chapter 4 I already had a game built and was able to test it on my phone. This game goes over every aspect of the process of making a mobile game from the coding to the monetezation philosophies. John P Doran and <Packt> publishing put together a phenomenal book.

If your just starting to program with Unity or in general, this book makes it easy to follow along to make really cool projects. I've been using Unity for a few years but I never really touched mobile development, but now I'm pretty confident in my abilities to create games in any mobile format.

This book is very thorough and goes into detail in step by step where one may get stuck when working with a mobile game. There are plenty of screenshots and it's written in a very intuitive way. There are several topics they go over how to set up your project to be exported to mobile such as:using Unity Remote, Mobile Input/Touch Controls, Advertising Using Unity Ads, Integrating Social Media into your game, Augmented Reality and much more.I've been meaning to get into mobile game development for iOS and Android and now I have a wholesome book that I can easily grow with! This book is good for beginners and experts as well.

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.
