Combining vMotion with Storage vMotion
vMotion and Storage vMotion can be combined into a single operational process to produce what is often called a shared nothing vMotion.
Without the availability of shared storage, such as vSAN, SAN, or NAS, an administrator can move VMs from host to host regardless of the storage type. Local storage, mixed shared storage, or standard shared storage are all valid options to use when combining vMotion with Storage vMotion.
Prior to vSphere 6, the only requirement for the combined vMotion and Storage vMotion was that both hosts needed to share the same L2 (Layer 2) network. This requirement was lifted with the introduction of multiple TCP/IP stacks. You can read more about multiple TCP/IP stacks in Chapter 5. Depending on how you want this feature to work, you may need to add extra requirements. We will discuss this using examples.
Example 1
- Two hosts on a single vMotion network.
- Both hosts use local datastores.
In the first example, the two hosts...
