User management, groups, ownership, and root privileges
In any OS, user management is an essential part of system management. Many years ago, computers were too expensive, so teams within organizations and families had to share one, with different accounts for each member. Historically, less experienced members had fewer privileges to prevent them from installing inappropriate applications or harming the system. User management also encompasses parental controls, so parents can make sure their children don’t get access to certain content and applications. In companies, user management ensures the company’s confidential information security, protects against malicious SW installation, and provides employees with only the resources they need without full access to critical data. In addition, as remote Linux virtual environments are frequently used in companies nowadays, user management is essential for allocating security privileges to different users.
