What is Twilio Client?

The Twilio platform began as a way to provide easy connectivity between applications and Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) lines, that is, physical or real phones.

Twilio Client was launched in 2011, allowing you to take calls purely within a browser with no other hardware, abstracting away traditional telephony infrastructure and offering an experience similar to making a call through Skype or another VoIP service.

Not only can you enable your users to receive and make calls in their browser or your app to and from PSTN lines, but Twilio Client also allows calls between VoIP clients, enabling a massive range of rich voice-based experiences.

Originally, Twilio Client's VoIP worked through an Adobe Flash shim, but in modern browsers, it uses the WebRTC protocol (http://www.webrtc.org), offering better quality and compatibility.
