SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor: Deployment and Administration

Chapter 2. Installing and Configuring SolarWinds SAM

After enabling the monitoring services on your nodes and creating service accounts, SolarWinds SAM should be installed on a supported version of the Windows server. Following installation, the Orion web console will launch in the host server's default web browser. This interface will be used for most administrative tasks in SolarWinds SAM. Upon first log in, Network Sonar Wizard (NSW) will start.

This chapter will walk you through deploying SolarWinds SAM, ensure it is a smooth process, and help answer any questions that you may have along the way.

Tip

Depending on the size of your network, it may be advantageous to install SolarWinds SAM and SQL on separate servers. For the purpose of this book, we will install both SolarWinds SAM and SQL on the same server.

Installing SolarWinds SAM

This is a quick guide for installing SolarWinds SAM and all Windows server prerequisites. Ensure that all the recommended Windows updates are installed before proceeding.

  1. Download the product from SolarWinds.com. If you have physical media, insert the CD or DVD and skip to step 4.

    1. Click on PRODUCTS.

    2. Select Server & Application Monitor.

    3. Click on DOWNLOAD FREE TRIAL (fully functional 30-day trial).

  2. Unzip the installation package and run the executable.

  3. If Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and 4.0 are not installed on your Windows server, then click on Install.

  4. If you downloaded the software, confirm the e-mail address you provided while registering and click on OK.

  5. Select Yes or No to sending anonymous data to SolarWinds.

  6. Click on Continue with Orion Installation. (Recommended) to install IIS automatically during installation.

  7. Review the license agreement, check I accept the terms of the License Agreement, and click on Next.

  8. Choose your preferred destination folder...

Configuring SolarWinds SAM

Following a successful installation, the Orion web console will automatically launch in your server's default web browser.

Log in to the interface using admin as the User name and leave the Password field empty.

Tip

Do not use the browser's back button while using the Orion web console.

Upon first log in, NSW will begin. We recommend that you complete the wizard, as it will save some time by enabling the SolarWinds SAM's "out-of-the-box" functionality.

Tip

Make note of the Windows server hostname (that is, computer name) where SolarWinds SAM resides; you can easily log in to the Orion web console from any network computer by using http://hostname:8787/ and replacing the hostname with your SolarWinds SAM server.

Network Sonar Wizard

This wizard will help populate the SolarWinds SAM database with:

  • Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) nodes

  • vCenter, ESX, or ESXi hosts (VMHosts)

  • Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) nodes

  • Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) via scanning...

Active Directory integration

The most practical way to administer and monitor SolarWinds SAM is through Orion web console, since it is accessible from any computer on your network. Depending on the size of your organization, there may be more than one individual who needs access to Orion web console. Certain individuals may also require less than administrative privileges.

For example, some users may need Guest rights, to allow viewing data, but remain prohibited from making changes. You may also choose to isolate specific IT departments or users to applicable nodes, such as isolating the telecom department to telecom-related nodes. Therefore, the most efficient route is to grant permission through AD integration.

This section will outline how to use AD for access control to Orion web console.

Procedures explain how to create a security group for granting administrative privileges, and then apply the group to your own domain account, followed by creating a required SolarWinds SAM access control...

Summary

After successfully deploying SolarWinds SAM, completing the NSW, and enabling AD access control, a foundation has been established for tailoring your new network monitoring service to your environment.

In this chapter, we covered:

  • Downloading the SolarWinds SAM 30-day trial

  • Installing SolarWinds SAM on Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Configuring SolarWinds SAM for basic network monitoring services

  • Integrating Active Directory for access control to the Orion web console

The Kindle version of this title works perfect. This title was exactly what I was looking for to get an overview of SolarWinds commands and server monitoring. I appreciate the effort the author and editor spent to make this book so readable and easy to read. The screenshots were also a great addition too the text and helped since I did not have the prerequisites of a Windows Server or SolarWinds install disk. Just needed to know enough to converse with SolarWinds Administrators at work and this book is basic enough for that and advanced enough to install and configure, and more importantly the Appendix covers some troubleshooting steps for post-install.

I recently transitioned from eight years as a Network Engineer, working almost exclusively with Cisco images via CLI, to a broader spectrum of Network Administration in another company. The new position has been my first exposure to SolarWinds network performance monitoring. I ordered SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor: Deployment and Administration by Justin M. Brant, to see whether it would be easy to comprehend and apply. The book arrived this past Saturday. I was a bit surprised at how small it is (97 pages of instruction, approximately 1/4 inch thick), so I was very skeptical as to how useful it might be. Well, I've read the book from cover to cover, and I must say I am very impressed! I'd discovered that I had already learned approximately two-thirds to maybe three-quarters of the material through on-the-job trial and error, and online Thwack and Google searches. Rather than being disappointed with what I could have regarded as a wasted purchase, I am instead very pleased to have confirmation of the knowledge I'd manage to acquire on my own, as well as a few of the "missing pieces" that online searches have failed to resolve. An added bonus (for me) is that it relates the SolarWinds setup with Microsoft Server 2008 R2, which is the database platform my employer's SolarWinds monitoring software is tied into. And there's a little bit more: two quick segments to show the inexperienced in Cisco the basics of configuring SNMP via IOS CLI, so that your Cisco devices may send data to SolarWinds. So, If you have absolutely no experience at all with SolarWinds, Cisco or MS Windows Server 2008 R2, or you have not configured it in a long time and your skills are rusty, this is most definitely the book for you! Extremely simple, to the point, very well laid out step-by-step, and well illustrated with screen shots for those like me who are much more visually oriented when it comes to learning. If you are looking for an intense, in-depth study of SolarWinds and why it relates with other systems the way that it does, or if you are looking for the solid "meat and potatoes" of definitions and terms related to networking, servers, databases, and network monitoring, then this book is not for you. Manufacturer's .pdf manuals will serve you much better in that regard. This Deployment and Administration guide is bare-bones basic, much like the setup instructions for a Blu-Ray or DVR or other simple device. But if that's what you need, then this book will most definitely get you started! Highly recommended for the beginner or for the experienced but "rusty!"

I am so impressed by this book and the author. The book teaches you the basics. The author has also made himself available to answer questions after reading his book. That's pretty unique if you ask me. Don't believe me? Check it out. https://www.facebook.com/jbrantsolarwinds

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
