Understanding lambda expressions

We have mentioned lambda expressions several times already and stated that their usage in Java justified the introduction of functional interfaces in the java.util.function package. The lambda expression allows us to simplify function implementation by removing all boilerplate code of anonymous classes, leaving only minimally necessary information. We have also explained that this simplification is possible because a functional interface has only one abstract method, so the compiler and JVM match the provided functionality with the method signature and generate the functional interface implementation behind the scene.

Now, it's time to define the lambda expression syntax and see the range of possible forms of lambda expressions, before we start using them to make our code shorter and more readable than when we used anonymous classes.
