Data models deal with data variety characteristics of the big data. Data models describe the characteristics of the data. There are two main sources of data:
- Structured data
- Unstructured data

Structured data
Structured data relates to data that has a defined length and format. Some common examples of structured data include numbers, dates, and groups of words and numbers, which are called strings. In general, structured data follows a pattern like that in Figure 3.1. Generally, the data has predefined columns and rows.
