Edge Locations are located in data centers separate from the region and availability zone locations. Their location is designed to be closer to the users so they are situated nearer to large urban locations that might not be close to any physical location of an AWS region. In some geographies, such as South Africa at the time of writing, the Edge Locations are positioned where no region exists so that the experience delivered to the end users can be close to what it would be if a region was located there. Services running in Edge Locations at the time of writing are as follows:
- CloudFront
- Route 53 (discussed in Chapter 11, Working with Relational Database Services)
- Lambda@Edge (discussed in Chapter 17, Overview of AWS Lambda)
