Learning what to capture in an RTM
A well-designed RTM should have enough fields for project team members to get a 360-degree view of the linkage from the business requirement to the test case status. Too many fields lead to confusion, and too few fields make it incomplete. I captured a few important fields here for reference so that users at a first glance will be able to trace the artifact bi-directionally. You can add more fields if it makes sense for your project implementation, and you can always hide a few fields and unhide them when needed.
We can utilize prior artifacts such as business requirements documents, functional documents, solution design documents, wireframes, process flows, test scripts, and test cases, and link key fields to establish and capture traceability. We can either create a long document with all possible fields from these artifacts or a simplified version with a few key unique fields. Based on these key unique fields, you can refer to respective documents...
