Planning for Azure Backup
Azure Backup is generally the first solution to consider when planning your backup strategy. Azure Backup uses the Microsoft Azure Recovery Services (MARS) agent, which is installed on a VM, to back up files, folders, and system state to a Recovery Services vault, which, in turn, uses a storage account for persisting those backups.
You can back up both Azure and on-premises VMs using the MARS agent, as well as Azure Managed Disks, Azure file shares, SQL Server on Azure VMs, PostgreSQL on Azure VMs, Azure blobs, and SAP HANA on Azure VMs.
Azure Backup can also use System Center Data Protection Manager (DPM), which is an enterprise backup system for on-premises servers. Using either DPM or Microsoft Azure Backup Server (MABS) on your existing on-premises infrastructure, you can take local backups and then move them into the cloud.
