Most vendors' wireless routers setups are very similar. Behind the wireless router there are typically five Ethernet ports; one connects to the internet (WAN) and the remaining four are switch ports, which are for the LAN.
The main components needed for a Wi-Fi router are as follows:
- Wireless router or Access Point (AP)
- A wireless-compatible device such as a laptop
- A wireless NIC (only if the device does not have a wireless network interface card)
Once your wireless router is powered on, connect your laptop to the default service set identifier (SSID). The SSID is the name of the wireless network. If you aren't sure, simply connect an Ethernet cable between the computer and the wireless router and ensure the cable is connected to one of the LAN ports on the wireless router.
