Differentiating null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis
This is the point where a lot of people get confused. When you are testing a hypothesis, you are not directly testing the hypothesis statement you write out at the beginning. You are testing to see whether the null hypothesis or the alternative hypothesis is true. Whatever you wrote out as your hypothesis will be linked to one of these two options. In other words, you are either agreeing with the null hypothesis or the alternative hypothesis. If you are still a little confused, it will make sense when we get into what these two options are.
Null hypothesis ()
The null hypothesis, most often denoted as , is the default hypothesis and says that there is no difference between the two groups. Being the default means that the two groups are the same until proven otherwise.
