The Art of Temperature Control

Global warming is a term on everyone’s mind. On a much smaller scale, maintaining the temperature of a material to a specific value can be quite challenging. This is in spite of the fact that temperature is said to be a slow-moving variable. Thus, managing temperature is an art. It is one problem to heat or cool the material to the desired temperature. It is a different problem to retain the material at that temperature. This is because natural phenomena, such as conduction, convection, and radiation, continuously transfer heat, which forces temperature change. As temperature changes slowly due to these processes, we must be precise and accurate about calculations. But why do we even fuss about controlling temperature accurately?

In this chapter, we will take you through various manufacturing setups, final products, and assemblies that all need the temperature to be precisely controlled. We will explain how heating and cooling are effectively...
