The differences between operations and project work

While platform operations and project work can intersect in many areas, there are several key differences between the two that require different models to be managed correctly. The following is a list of the key activities for both project and operational work and highlights their differences:

  • Business outcomes: Both project work and operational work delivers specific business outcomes and, in this respect, there is very little difference between the two. Platform operations will more frequently involve “ongoing” business activities (defect remediation, incident management, platform performance, and maintenance management) that occur continuously and are typically not always accounted for during projects.
