Understanding the prerequisites for Hyper-V protection

This recipe will cover the prerequisites for Hyper-V protection. Before you are able to provide a restore plan for your virtual machines to recover the services that you are providing in your modern data center, you need to understand the prerequisites for protecting Hyper-V.

The supported versions of Hyper-V that DPM 2012 R2 can protect and restore are:

  • Windows Server 2012 R2 - Data center and Standard
  • Windows Server 2012 - Data center and Standard
  • Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 - Enterprise and Standard

Note

System Center Data Protection Manager 2012 R2 can also protect Linux running as a virtual machine in the Hyper-V environment.

The different versions of the Hyper-V role that the Windows Server operating system hosts work similarly but uses different kinds of underlying architecture within the operating system.
