Pass-through disks in a cluster

A pass-through disk is a hardware storage location that is directly connected to a guest. This is in contrast to using a VHD file controlled by Hyper-V. While popular in earlier editions, the pass-through disk has become effectively obsolete with the continued maturity of virtual hard disks. However, if you choose to use them, they continue to be supported. If used in a cluster environment, there are extra concerns.

Pass-through disks cannot be internal storage since that is not accessible to all cluster nodes. Your choices will be to use an iSCSI or Fibre Channel LUN. Follow the connection directions from Chapter 3, Constructing a Hyper-V Server Cluster, as if you were adding the LUN to cluster disks, but stop before bringing it online on any node. Do not add it to Cluster Disks in Failover Cluster Manager or you will be unable to use it as a pass-through disk.

Once all nodes have been connected, add the disk directly to the virtual machine using its Settings...
