Magento 2 Theme Design

Chapter 2.  Exploring Magento Themes

"It's an up and down thing, the human goals, because the human is always an explorer, an adventurist" - Cesar Millan

As you've already seen, Magento 2 can be a complex platform to customize, so this chapter will help you to explore Magento 2 themes, including the following:

  • Magento terminology
  • What a Magento theme is: the elements that comprise a Magento 2 theme
  • Theme hierarchy in Magento 2
  • Magento's Blank and Luma themes
  • Installing and activating a Magento 2 theme

Magento terminology

Before you look at Magento themes, it's beneficial to know the difference between what Magento calls vendors and what Magento calls themes and the distinguishing factors of websites and stores.

Magento vendors and themes

According to the official documentation, a Magento theme is a component that provides a visual design for an entire application area using a combination of custom templates, layouts, styles, or images. Themes are implemented by different vendors and are intended to be distributed as additional packages for Magento, similar to other components.

Each vendor can have one or more themes attached to it, so you can develop different themes inside the same vendor:

Magento vendors and themes

Each theme can have specific rules and custom layout files providing better flexibility both for administrators and developers. The Magento 2 theme structure can be described as follows:

What makes a Magento theme?

A Magento theme is a collection of files that define the look, layout, and other outputs from the Magento system.

Unique aspects of a Magento theme

Magento 2 themes differ from design implementations in other content management systems and e-commerce platforms in a few key ways:

  • Maximum ability to customize Magento
  • Support for multiple concurrent themes
  • They offer an uninterrupted workflow
  • They minimize debugging time for errors

Magento's theming system provides the ability to highly customize the way Magento 2 looks to your customers: you can customize every aspect of your Magento store through layout, CSS, JavaScript, templates, and local files.

The support for multiple concurrent themes is another feature that makes Magento somewhat unique in its field, allowing you to style your store differently with Magento.

Default Magento 2 themes

By default, Magento 2 comes with two different themes:

  1. Luma: Created with the purpose to initiate the understanding of Magento 2's theme structure. It's highly recommended not to use this as your production theme.
  2. Blank: Provides the basic theme structure, used as a boilerplate to develop new themes in Magento 2.

You can easily preview the Luma theme on the Magento demonstration site at http://demo2.aheadworks.com , provided by aheadWorks Company (http://www.aheadworks.com).

Magento Luma theme

The Luma theme implements responsive web design (RWD) as a good practice to use in theme development, and inherits code and layout from the Blank theme. The Magento 2 Blank theme, found in the vendor/magento/theme-frontend-blank folder, is the basic Magento theme and is declared as the parent theme of Luma. How is it possible? Logically, Magento has distinct folders for every theme, but Magento is very smart and reuses code. Magento takes advantage of theme inheritance...

Blocks and pages in Magento

Magento uses blocks to differentiate between the various components of its functionality, the idea being that this makes it easier for Magento developers and Magento theme designers to customize the functionality of Magento and the look and feel of Magento respectively.

A content block displays the generated HTML provided by Magento for any given feature. Content blocks are used within Magento structural blocks. Examples of content blocks in Magento include the following:

  • The search feature
  • Product listings
  • The mini cart
  • Category listings
  • Site navigation links
  • Callouts (advertising blocks)

Simply, content blocks are the what of a Magento theme: they define what type of content appears within any given page or view within Magento.

Usually, the blocks are available in a visual hierarchy from a page. A typical structure of a three-column block in a Magento theme includes the following:

  • Header
  • Primary area
  • Left column
  • Right column
  • Footer

Description

Magento is the e-commerce software and platform trusted by the world’s leading brands. Using Magento’s powerful theming engine, you can control the look, content, and functionality, and easily launch a flexible e-commerce website. However, because of its powerful features, developing Magento themes is easier said than done. This book aims to leverage the enhancements to theme designing in Magento 2 to the fullest. It will show you how to gear up the performance of your e-commerce website. We begin by introducing Magento 2 and its features along with implementing a local development Magento environment. We then move on to discuss the concepts of the Magento theme structure such as templates, inheritance, customization, and override. Further on, we explore the Magento UI Library, which is a new feature available in Magento 2.0. We will create a new Magento 2.0 theme named MyCake Store using Magento Bootstrap from Maven E-commerce and also create print strategies for the Magento 2.0 theme. We will also create and customize a new theme proposal for the Magento admin panel. At the end, we will integrate Magento 2.0 to Twitter and integrate it with social bookmarking and finally deploy our new Magento 2.0 theme.

Who is this book for?

This book is for web designers and developers with existing knowledge of CSS, HTML, and XML who wish to create themes for Magento 2. Existing Magento 1.x theme designers who now want to develop themes for Magento 2 will also find this book useful.

E' un ottimo libro come primo approccio al design dei temi su Magento 2.Gli argomenti vengono trattati in modo chiaro e ordinato.Ad ogni modo per padroneggiare l'argomento sono necessari degli approfondimenti.

Very difficult to follow all the steps described in the book. Some steps are missing. You need already quite a good understanding of Magento developing. Understanding the english translation is quite difficult. Book is useless to me, although I have experience in PHP, HTML, CSS, XML.

What is custom duty/charge? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Customs duty are charges levied on goods when they cross international borders. It is a tax that is imposed on imported goods. These duties are charged by special authorities and bodies created by local governments and are meant to protect local industries, economies, and businesses.

Do I have to pay customs charges for the print book order? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The orders shipped to the countries that are listed under EU27 will not bear custom charges. They are paid by Packt as part of the order.

List of EU27 countries: www.gov.uk/eu-eea:

A custom duty or localized taxes may be applicable on the shipment and would be charged by the recipient country outside of the EU27 which should be paid by the customer and these duties are not included in the shipping charges been charged on the order.

How do I know my custom duty charges? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The amount of duty payable varies greatly depending on the imported goods, the country of origin and several other factors like the total invoice amount or dimensions like weight, and other such criteria applicable in your country.

For example:

  • If you live in Mexico, and the declared value of your ordered items is over $ 50, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 19% which will be $ 9.50 to the courier service.
  • Whereas if you live in Turkey, and the declared value of your ordered items is over € 22, for you to receive a package, you will have to pay additional import tax of 18% which will be € 3.96 to the courier service.
