Learn SOLIDWORKS

Chapter 1: Introduction to SOLIDWORKS

SOLIDWORKS is a Three-Dimensional (3D) design application. This is a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software that runs on Windows computer systems. It was launched in 1995 and has grown to be one of the most common pieces of software used globally regarding engineering design.

This book covers the fundamental skills for using SOLIDWORKS. It will take you from knowing nothing about the software to acquiring all the basic skills expected of a Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP). En route, we will also cover all the skills needed for the more basic Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) level. In addition to knowing what the tools are, you will also need to develop software fluency, which you will gain gradually as you practice using the software for different applications. Both the tools and the fluency are essential to acquiring any official SOLIDWORKS certifications. If you are new to SOLIDWORKS, we recommend that you follow the book like a story, from Chapter 1, Introduction to SOLIDWORKS, onward. If you are already familiar with SOLIDWORKS, feel free to jump between chapters.

This chapter will provide you with a brief introduction to what SOLIDWORKS is and the fields it can support. Equipped with this knowledge, we will learn about all the features and capabilities of SOLIDWORKS and will have a clearer idea of what types of certifications or fields you can strive for. Learning about applicable certifications will enable you to plan your personal SOLIDWORKS development.

The chapter will also explain the governing principle with which SOLIDWORKS functions: parametric modeling. Equipped with a knowledge of SOLIDWORKS' operating principles, we will be able to deepen our understanding of how the software works and what to expect from it. Understanding the software's operating principles will help us manage the different software commands that are used when building 3D models.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • Introducing SOLIDWORKS
  • Understanding parametric modeling
  • Exploring SOLIDWORKS certifications

  • Discover design practices for both 2D as well as 3D modeling and prepare to achieve CSWP and CSWA certification

Description

SOLIDWORKS is the leading choice for 3D engineering and product design applications across industries such as aviation, automobile, and consumer product design. This book helps you to get up and running with SOLIDWORKS and understand each new concept and tool with the help of easy-to-follow exercises. You'll begin with the basics, exploring the software interface and finding out how to work with drawing files. The book then guides you through topics such as sketching, building complex 3D models, generating dynamic and static assemblies, and generating 2D engineering drawings to prepare you to take on any design project. You'll also work with practical exercises to get hands-on experience with creating sketches, 3D part models, assemblies, and drawings. To reinforce your understanding of SOLIDWORKS, the book is supplemented by downloadable files that will help you to understand the concepts and exercises more easily. Finally, you'll also work on projects for 3D modeling objects inspired by everyday life. By the end of this SOLIDWORKS book, you'll have gained the skills you need to create professional 3D mechanical models using SOLIDWORKS and be able to prepare effectively for the Certified SOLIDWORKS Associate (CSWA) and Certified SOLIDWORKS Professional (CSWP) exams.

Who is this book for?

This book is for aspiring engineers, designers, makers, draftsmen, and hobbyists looking to get started with SOLIDWORKS and explore the software. Individuals who are interested in becoming Certified SOLIDWORKS Associates (CSWAs) or Certified SOLIDWORKS Professionals (CSWPs) will also find this book useful. No specific background is needed to follow the concepts in the book as it starts from the basics of SOLIDWORKS. However, basic theoretical knowledge of 3D modeling will be helpful to get the most out of this book.

What you will learn

  • Understand the fundamentals of SOLIDWORKS and parametric modeling
  • Create professional 2D sketches as bases for 3D models using simple and advanced modeling techniques
  • Use SOLIDWORKS drawing tools to generate standard engineering drawings
  • Evaluate mass properties and materials for designing parts and assemblies
  • Join different parts together to form static and dynamic assemblies
  • Discover expert tips and tricks to generate different part and assembly configurations for your mechanical designs

Despite having used Solidworks for a few years, previously, this book showed me how to optimize many parts of my solidworks work flow with simple procedures and easy to follow steps. Improving my efficiency in fully defining sketches and feature parameters helped set me up to write the CWSP exam without stressing about the completion time.I found the book after completing Tayseer’s CWSA and CWSP courses on his online school (T for Design) and it is has been a great resource to have on hand to anytime I have run into a question on the job since completing the online content.

As a reference book for overcoming difficulties that occur at work, it is very well structured so that you can directly find what you are looking for. This book is one of the best ways for beginners to get started with Solidworks and learn it the right way you should. I speak from the point of view of someone with some experience in Solidworks , and although I have already acquired the CSWP certificate , I have found many tips , tricks and instructions that have helped me to increase my level . the content is a bit more extensive and some information has been repeated to be better explained for beginners , but I really can not complain about it . I find the summary and the questions at the end of the chapters very helpful to practice the required skills . what I really admired are the projects ( 3D modeling of a pair of glasses , 3D modeling of a RC helicopter model ). I recommend this book for both beginners and professionals. The ideal guide to get started. Very systematic structure and easy to understand.

I used this book to learn Solidworks 3D experience, which is the low cost home version of Solidworks and found everything worked the same as in the text. Once in a while a command would be sluggish to execute when my internet was slow which kind of made it look like things weren't working but I got used to waiting once in a while. Overall a good text and well organized. Good at telling why you are doing things. But not so good at telling you exactly which mouse clicks make things happen. So I ended up doing web searches with words like "how to select center of a circle in Solidworks" and found lots of helpful YouTube videos. So I got through the book at a steady 20 pages a day and am happy with what I learned. I was able to find all the files described in the book on the web without too much trouble. Some of the figures were hard to make out because they are in only grey tones and the text calls out colors like red.

I received the book as part of a review step and this is, indeed, a true complete guide to Solidworks. You can easily find any information through table of contents, very well structured. If you want to know the why and how, this is the book you need, mainly if you just started using Solidworks or if you are a beginner. But… it gives you more than knowledge, it gives you a healthy workflow style (easy-fix tips and tricks in case you designed something ”wrong”). I have attended a couple of online courses of this author, and he is a mastermind of design thinking, not only in Solidworks, but also from an educational standpoint. Also, are presented a lot of ways to design a part – useful, time-saver and inclusive.I believe this is a great reference for more experienced users in case you want to try a new design method / feature or workflow. Can’t go wrong having this book it!
