Jira Work Management for Business Teams

Chapter 1: Why Choose Jira Work Management?

For years, Atlassian's flagship collection of products known as Jira has been a favorite for project and product managers. This also rings true for those working in the field of information technology service management (ITSM). Jira has come a long way since it debuted in 2002 as an issue- and bug-tracking tool, with several products now having been launched since the initial offering.

So, whether you are a seasoned veteran of the Jira world or brand new to this funny-sounding tool landscape, this book will be just what you need to get up and running with navigating the product known as Jira Work Management (JWM).

As these new Jira products have sprouted up, there has come additional functionality and, unfortunately to an extent, increased complexity in creating, using, and managing projects. Don't get me wrong—I love the flexibility and enhancements that have been made. But I also have years of experience working with the Jira toolset, and for new users and administrators, Jira can be daunting.

Having said all of that, it begs the question: If many products are being offered by Atlassian, why should we choose JWM? The quick answer is that JWM provides a simple and fast path to creating new projects in Jira while incorporating new and exciting functionality not found in other Jira-related products.

At its very essence, JWM is a retooling and rebranding of the initial Jira Core product for business projects. This chapter will describe the differences in the products to help ease the move into this next generation of the tool.

But just being the rebranding of an existing tool is not a good enough reason to choose to use JWM. So, what are some things that set it apart?

First, JWM integrates seamlessly with the existing Jira family of products such as Jira Software (JSW) and Jira Service Management (JSM) projects and the Jira Cloud platform REpresentational State Transfer (REST) application programming interface (API) functionality. This integration means there is already a familiarity with the general execution of Atlassian products and their great reputation.

Add to those reasons the powerful performance of built-in project automation, the simple process of project creation and setup, and a suite of new tools, and you have one of the best new project management products on the market.

In this chapter, we're going to cover the following main topics:

  • Comparing project types in Jira
  • Review of the Jira Core product
  • What's new in JWM?
  • New terms learned in this chapter

Upon completion of this chapter, you will be able to describe how JWM projects are different from other Jira projects and which situations are best suited to each product type.

Technical requirements

As JWM is only available in the Jira Cloud environment, the requirement for this chapter is simple: access to a Jira Cloud environment.

If you already have access to Jira Cloud, that's great—you're ready to go! If not, Atlassian provides a free JWM account for up to 10 users. You can create your account by going to https://www.atlassian.com/try/cloud/signup?bundle=jira-core&edition=free and following the instructions.

Key benefits

  • Get to grips with Jira Core updates
  • Discover how to use all the new JWM features such as lists, templates, calendars, and forms
  • Learn about administration schemes, automation, and simple administration capabilities

Description

Jira Work Management (JWM) is the newest project management tool from Atlassian, replacing Atlassian's previous product, Jira Core Cloud. While Jira Software focuses on development groups, JWM is specifically targeted toward business teams in your organization, such as human resources, accounting, legal, and marketing, enabling these functional groups to manage and enhance their work, as well as stay connected with their company's developers and other technical groups. This book helps you to explore Jira project templates and work creation and guides you in modifying a board, workflow, and associated schemes. Jira Work Management for Business Teams takes a hands-on approach to JWM implementation and associated processes that will help you get up and running with Jira and make you productive in no time. As you explore the toolset, you'll find out how to create reports, forms, and dashboards. The book also shows you how to manage screens, field layouts, and administer your JWM projects effectively. Finally, you'll get to grips with the basics of creating automation rules and the most popular use cases. By the end of this Jira book, you'll be able to build and manage your own Jira Work Management projects and make basic project-related adjustments to achieve optimal productivity.

Who is this book for?

This book is for product managers and project managers who want to learn how to quickly get started with non-software projects in Jira. End users working as part of functional teams, including human resources, finance, legal, and marketing teams will also benefit greatly from this book. Familiarity with Jira is helpful but not required.

What you will learn

  • Understand how JWM can help your company to increase productivity
  • Discover how to use templates to create projects quickly and with ease
  • Leverage JWM s newest features, including an in-line editable list, a built-in calendar, a roadmap-style timeline, and an updated board
  • Explore custom fields and see the impact of your project screen arrangement
  • Get to grips with simple administration and how schemes can be used to ease maintenance
  • Find out how Atlassian Marketplace apps can extend your Jira product

Although the author states in his preface:"This book is for product and project managers who want to learn how to quickly getstarted with non-software projects in Jira. End users working as part of functional teamssuch as HR, finance, legal, marketing, and so on will also benefit greatly. Familiaritywith Jira is helpful but not required."The truth is that even experienced Jira Admins will gain from the insights in this book. The author does a great job of covering many of the key functions of Jira and their application to project management. Jira is a complex software suite and can be daunting to approach for new users. Even seasoned users often only unlock 10% of the total potential of a Jira project. As I read the book, and applied my own knowledge and experience, I found myself updating and revising current projects for better performance, tracking and reporting. The author does a great job of explaining all of this in terms that new users can understand and comprehend. The step-by-step instruction guides are clear and easy to follow. It is apparent that a lot of effort went into the presentation of the material. This is not just a collection of use cases and examples, it is a truly holistic tome on the subject matter.

John is a wonderful human and an extremely knowledgeable Atlassian Expert. This book is a perfect example of John 's expertise in a format that is easy to follow and written for beginners to Jira Work Management.I love that John has taken the time to include visual aids to explain what he is talking about. I also really appreciate that this book organized this book in a progressive manner, where the knowledge in each new chapter builds on the concepts introduced in the previous one.I would strongly encourage people to heed John's final advice in joining the Atlassian Community. The Atlassian Cloud products change rapidly and the Online Community is usually one of the first places to learn about what new features are available and how things might be changing from what you are used to seeing.

Even though I have been administering Jira systems for eight years, I still benefitted from reading this book because I was not very familiar with JWM. The author explains the difference between the various Jira versions very well; focusing on the benefits and tools that come with Jira Work Management.I also learned some tricks and shortcuts that I am carefully storing in my Atlassian tool chest. This is a well written book and I can tell the author is well versed in the Jira products. Topics are easily accessible and provide enough information without going overboard. The graphics in the book also help illustrate complex concepts, for example the screen scheme hierarchy. This book does not only teach about JWM since many of the concepts and procedures in the book apply equally to JSW and JSM, thereby making this book an excellent spring board for those brand new to any of the Atlassian Jira products.I do like how the author includes links to Atlassian documentation in different sections of the book. This helped me to quickly find further documentation on the topic at hand. The only real downside to this book is that it is about a Cloud version of a software that is constantly evolving. Therefore, some of it's features have changed from the time this book was written.

If you are starting out on one or more of Atlassian's Jira Cloud products (Jira Software, Jira Service Management, Jira Work Management), this book is an excellent guide on administrating those parts, such as screens, workflows, and their associated schemes, that are common between all three products. The instruction is well-written with simple instructions and plenty of screenshots to guide you through any administrative task. But the book also shines a spotlight on Jira Work Management, the newest Jira Cloud product from Atlassian meant for business teams. Here, John gives ample descriptions of those features such as Timeline Views and Calendar Views. These descriptions are complete and written in simple non-technical language which allows anyone to pick up and learn about Jira Work Management.I was able to pick up an advance copy as a fellow Atlassian Community Leader, but I'm ordering a physical copy for my bookshelf. I feel that the book is that good and so valuable in my work.
