Encrypting data in transit is critical for systems with sensitive data, which accounts for most systems these days. Fully managed cloud services, such as function-as-a-service, cloud-native databases, and API Gateways, encrypt data in transit as a matter of course. This helps ensure that our data in motion is secured across the full stack, with little to no effort on our part. However, we ultimately want to expose our cloud-native resources via custom domain names. To do this and support SSL, we must provide our own SSL certificates. This process can be tedious and we must ensure that we rotate certificates in a timely manner before they expire and cause a system outage.
