Key benefits

  • Develop mobile apps, AR games, and chatbots of varying complexity with the help of real-world examples
  • Explore the important features of Xamarin.Forms 4 such as Shell, CollectionView, and CarouselView
  • Get to grips with advanced concepts such as AR and VR and machine learning for mobile development

Description

Xamarin.Forms is a lightweight cross-platform development toolkit for building apps with a rich user interface. Improved and updated to cover the latest features of Xamarin.Forms, this second edition covers CollectionView and Shell, along with interesting concepts such as augmented reality (AR) and machine learning. Starting with an introduction to Xamarin and how it works, this book shares tips for choosing the type of development environment you should strive for when planning cross-platform mobile apps. You’ll build your first Xamarin.Forms app and learn how to use Shell to implement the app architecture. The book gradually increases the level of complexity of the projects, guiding you through creating apps ranging from a location tracker and weather map to an AR game and face recognition. As you advance, the book will take you through modern mobile development frameworks such as SQLite, .NET Core Mono, ARKit, and ARCore. You’ll be able to customize your apps for both Android and iOS platforms to achieve native-like performance and speed. The book is filled with engaging examples, so you can grasp essential concepts by writing code instead of reading through endless theory. By the end of this book, you’ll be ready to develop your own native apps with Xamarin.Forms and its associated technologies, such as .NET Core, Visual Studio 2019, and C#.

Who is this book for?

This book is for C# and .NET developers who want to learn Xamarin.Forms and get started with native Xamarin mobile application development from the ground up. Working knowledge of Visual Studio will help you to get the most out of this book.

What you will learn

  • Set up Xamarin.Forms to build native apps with code-sharing capabilities
  • Understand the core aspects of developing a mobile app, such as its layout, UX, and rendering
  • Use custom renderers to gain platform-specific access
  • Discover how to create custom layouts for your apps with Xamarin.Forms Shell
  • Use Azure SignalR to implement serverless services in your Xamarin apps
  • Create an augmented reality (AR) game for Android and iOS using ARCore and ARKit, respectively
  • Build and train machine learning models using CoreML, TensorFlow, and Azure Cognitive Services

The book covers almost everything about Xamarin Forms and it is not written for a newbie programmer. It assumes that the reader has already a good familiarity with C#.Unfortunately the most important chapter imho (chapter 2) fails to explain the basics trying to cover everything (MVVM, bindings, Dependency injection, Autofac etc) with a complicated ViewModel design and poor namings. For example there is a ViewModel named ItemViewModel and a second one ToDoItemViewModel. It took me hours to understand the purpose of every ViewModel. I would prefer this chapter to cover a simple ViewModel binding to a Page (View) at first - in order the reader to understand the different parts and their role and only then to proceed with a more complicated design and dependency injection improvements (Autofac). MVVM concept is a major paradigm shift from classic windows programming where there is a direct relation between your code and the gui elements.

I did every project in the book. The teaching quality is excellent! It is a well-rounded approach to learning all about Xamarin Forms and developing cross-platform mobile apps. I would give it five stars but, there were a couple things lacking, in my opinion. I really would like more pictures of the final app that we are developing in each chapter. They had a few pics but not enough. Also, they did not have an example of a CRUD application where you build your own API backend with your own database and make calls to the API to get and save data in your database. That would have been really helpful since that is what I am asked to do most of the time in my job. And at least one project example using the Prism library would have been helpful too. It is mentioned in the book but not used. Otherwise a great read and a superb intro into all things Xamarin!

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.

How will I know when new chapters are ready? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We'll let you know every time there has been an update to a course that you've bought in Early Access. You'll get an email to let you know there has been a new chapter, or a change to a previous chapter. The new chapters are automatically added to your account, so you can also check back there any time you're ready and download or read them online.

What is Early Access? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

Keeping up to date with the latest technology is difficult; new versions, new frameworks, new techniques. This feature gives you a head-start to our content, as it's being created. With Early Access you'll receive each chapter as it's written, and get regular updates throughout the product's development, as well as the final course as soon as it's ready. We created Early Access as a means of giving you the information you need, as soon as it's available. As we go through the process of developing a course, 99% of it can be ready but we can't publish until that last 1% falls in to place. Early Access helps to unlock the potential of our content early, to help you start your learning when you need it most. You not only get access to every chapter as it's delivered, edited, and updated, but you'll also get the finalized, DRM-free product to download in any format you want when it's published. As a member of Packt, you'll also be eligible for our exclusive offers, including a free course every day, and discounts on new and popular titles.
