Defining notification settings
Certain apps may need to notify you when certain events occur. For example, the Calendar app may notify you of an upcoming appointment and the Clock app may need to notify you when you've set an alarm.
Notifications allow apps to alert you when certain events occur, but you likely don't want every app to display notifications, or else they could prove annoying if notifications appear too often. You can set turning notifications on or off. If you turn notifications on, you can also define one or more of the following, as shown in Figure 3.21:
- Alerts: Pops a window in the middle of the screen to block everything until you dismiss the alert.
- Banners: Displays a skinny pane at the top of the screen that either appears temporarily or permanently until you tap to dismiss it.
- Sounds: Plays a distinctive noise when a notification appears.
