Further possibilities
The Hyper-V Virtual Switch is extensible. This means that third-party developers can write software plug-ins that add capabilities to the switch that are not available directly from Microsoft. The three most common applications for extensions are packet capture, packet filtering (such as firewalls), and virtual gateway services. Some hardware vendors provide extensions that allow virtual switches and adapters special capabilities to communicate with their equipment. If the virtual switch doesn't suit your needs as shipped, search to see if there are any extensions that can provide a solution. Remember that SR-IOV adapters will be exempt from these extensions.
Note
Be aware that some extensions require Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM) in order to operate correctly. SCVMM is a centralized management tool for Hyper-V that adds many capabilities. It is not required for any of the scenarios or configurations described in this book.
