Understanding gateway and network setup
Setting up the initial gateways is not difficult, and it seems to have become easier over the years. We have probably set up gateways with most of the network providers in the 900 MHz US space, primarily focused on the LoRaWAN protocol. Data from the sensor to the gateway and then to the network server is just one or two hops in our architecture. This is the act of getting your sensor data to the IT network or the cloud directly. From there, it can be identified and acted upon, along with other data streams.
We will try and stay focused on the overall setup and limit step-by-step details. Setting up a gateway will be well documented by your chosen vendor, and the details will change somewhat even before this book goes to print. The overall process has not changed much over the last few years, so this is where we will focus. We have chosen to highlight two providers in this section: TTN and AWS IoT Core for LoRaWAN.
