Too many books are now more distillations of other people work consolidated into their own book. This "google research" is often more harmful than good. It is clear that Gary builds off of what he's actually done. In this book many aspects of creating value are described.Value stream management is the bridge to what will be the next generation of creating business value. Agile has focused on the team and has difficulty making the jump to the entire organization. Gary explains how the value stream is essential to make this jump.Highly recommend this book.

Value stream management IS the next generation of Devops. The software industry has seen amazing organizational transformations with DevOps which has evolved from its early focus on teamwork to driving value for an organization. VSM for Devops is so new that we haven’t seen much published on it yet until now!The book talks you through how to use VSM as a methodology to discover areas of improvement across all organizational value streams, while simultaneously using VSM tools to make lean-oriented improvements to your devops based software delivery pipelines. Moreover, the content is thorough and well-researched coming from practical experience over philosophical approaches to problem solving. It has four parts (Value Delivery, VSM Methodology, VSM Tool Vendors and Frameworks, Applying VSM with Devops) which makes it long but it has been laid out in a structured way that enables the reader to walk through it easily and refer back to the different sections when needed. The industry experts have published a lot of material independently but this book does a great job of stringing practices together - devops, lean, agile, devsecops, and the list goes on. Most importantly, it very effectively describes how devops and value stream management go hand in hand. It takes the time to walk you through the different ways to define value and the importance of understanding how to use it in context. This is an important initial step before applying a systems-thinking approach to improving value delivery in large organizations. There are many parts of this book that I found useful but I will call out two of my favorites...the focus on the implementation of real time metrics and KPI’s to provide end to end visibility to outcomes across the portfolio and the interviews with industry leaders which revealed a lot of great nuggets of information.Huge thank you to Gary for bringing this all together!

This book is a wonderful collection of valuable information that will serve anybody heading down a down a DevOps path very well. The content Gary has brought together here provides practical advice on how to apply Value Stream Mapping and Management techniques to enable your organization.Whether you are new to the space or looking for a useful reference this book provides it in spades. As a practitioner that is well versed in the content here, as a reference manual is probably how I will find myself using the material. There is an impressive amount of content here and as a consequence, you have some complex topics covered in only in passing.I would say that some of the images are a little "dated" and occasionally blurry, this is especially odd in such a recent book that includes some very up to date guidance.Overall this is definitely a book worth picking up if you are engaged in this space.

While DevOps has been the hot topic for a while now, applying Value Stream Management adds the secret sauce to improve and focus its success and value. The book is well written and clearly comes from someone who has both ‘been there, done it’ and honed their skills and experience over time and many projects. It will be of special interest to those involved in the setup and operation of DevOps processes and systems as well as those who need to be able to demonstrate their value and ROI as well as the identification of improvements. It will also be of benefit to those who want to familiarise themselves with and better understand VSM as it continues to grow in significance and adoption by software vendors and platform owners.

If you could pick one book on Value Stream for your DevOps project, this would be it. This is going on my permanent digital reading shelf and I may purchase an additional print copy to add notes for my own use-cases. Rupp starts at the beginning with the philosophical outline for Value Stream and DevOps, well-researched, and with extensive references and drawings. The book provides four sections, Value Delivery, VSM Methodology, VSM Tool Vendors and Frameworks, and Applying VSM with DevOps. Any individual section would have been worth purchasing as a separate book but Rupp combines them in one place. The book’s middle part improves even further, beginning with the basic eight-step process for a value stream and then diving into every step. Suggestions are offered for improvement in multiple business types although, since it is a DevOps book, the main focus appears in the IT solutions. Each step appears in detail, with models, diagrams, and suggestions to improve your organization’s value stream. Equally important is the manual’s strong connection to Lean delivery, scarcely a page goes by without a reference to the original Japanese practices in Kaizen (continuous improvement), Kanban (Work-flow visualization), Hejunka (Connecting multiple Kanbans), Gemba (management by walking around), Jidoka(automation), and Poka-Yoke(mistake-proofing). If you haven’t heard the terms, Rupp makes it easy.If I had one complaint, it is the sheer length of the volume. Finally tapping out at over 675 pages, the wealth of knowledge contained here is impossible to describe. The other downfall is I would like to recommend this book to consulting clients, but having read the book, they might no longer need me. I could easily use this book as a foundation for a Master’s level business or IT course for an entire semester, if not multiple semesters. This is a must-have reference for anyone involved with production, DevOps, or management-level concerns. Having read it once, I will certainly be going back to it, again and again, to solve problems and improve my own DevOps practices. This is can’t miss instructional on DevOps and value-stream.
