As an artist, paint has always been too messy, too expensive, and just too much trouble Draw and Paint Better with Krita by Wesley Gardner from Packt offers an alternative to those problems. This free and open-source solution has a large community base and can help launch anyone’s digital painting technique in a couple of hours. The text begins with the basics of digital painting, works through a landscape example with layers, and then moves into advanced concepts of art principles and digital success. The first section deals with installing Krita, making sure the right peripherals are available on the system and selecting a tablet to use for drawing. Also covered are the basics of using layers and how to select the correct settings when drawing. Art fundamentals are not left out, explaining how computers deal with color, pixels, and the challenges when trying to print art for production or framing. The middle section uses an excellent landscape example, to begin with a reference, and modify it into multiple layers. It shows how to blend the photo into the painting, distinguish sections, build a perspective grid, and then link it all back together. The hands-on steps are excellent in introducing the different features and integrating the results. The final section deals with advanced art, steering the user back to some fundamental principles like the rule of threes and the golden rule that can easily be built into layers. These layers can be used to initially structure the art, and then hidden out when it comes to being time for the final project. In the same manner, the book demonstrates how to trace a reference, and then expand to your own project. The author builds a fantasy art picture as an example of doing contract work and making custom changes to a finished product without losing originals. Overall, this is a great introductory reference to digital art with Krita. If you are looking for a system to use or to expand into new media types with your art, this is probably the option for you. The author suggests Krita can be used for animation and digital art but mentions his own experience is in painting so that is where he concentrates. An excellent reference as either a starting point or just to reemphasize skills with digital art.

I have been looking for a good Krita book for a long time, and this is exactly what I was looking for. This did a lot to build my confidence to jump fully into Krita so thank you SO much!Through some good examples of different workflows the author presents the tools that are foundational for using Krita to make your own creations. This book is also the Rosetta Stone for using other texts that are usually photoshop heavy since it helps translate what those other tools would look like when using KritaThis has been a tremendous find and its started me up on my digital painting path again, so once again thank you to the author!

not really anything you cant get from youtube for free its not a very interesting book Ive learnt precisely nothing and Im a complete beginner who had to watch youtube first to get the hang of Krita I bought the book in the hope Id be learning something I cant find anywhere else but no such luck waste of money really

This is a decent introduction to Krita FOSS Image Editing Software; as there are only two textbooks available and the other one is quite outdated!However, I wish I could rate this book higher than two stars, because this book desperately needs a different/better editor, as the author has a bad habit of using exclamation marks to finish sentences which are not exclamatory! This author's informal writing style may be fine for a Reddit post, but not for a published textbook being sold to paying customers!It comes off as creepy, overly-familiar, and paternalistic, like the author has never had a proper 1-on-1 interaction with an adult student, so it's really off-putting and gross. I get the feeling that if I took a class by the author I would be constantly worried that I would be sexually harassed based on writing-style alone. It's that bad.Please hire a real editor and not a 3rd-party editing-service, because the book is otherwise fine.

The author describes meticulously how he is developing a drawing layer by layer and explains which tools he uses in Krita. so far so good, but he doesn't go much beyond that description. The step-by-step approach is okay for unexperienced users to learn some functionalities of Krita and memorize some of the keyboard shortcuts. Unfortunately, the examples in this book are far less impressive than many of the artwork you'll find in many online-tutorials on YT, not to mention Krita's own YT-channel. OK, these tutorials focus on teaching the techniques and tools of the app, whereas the book promises "Draw and Paint Better", which IMHO includes some more general or theoretical insights into perception and creation of (digital) art. Instead of learning how the author works, I's rather like to learn which different stylistic approaches exist and how to achieve them in Krita, or e.g. know more about pro-teqniques used by other artists.
