Chapter 1. Preparing the BeagleBone Black

The BeagleBone Black, with its low cost and amazing package of functionalities, provides an excellent set of core functionalities to build robotic projects. In this book, you'll build three robotics projects, each with a differing array of fascinating functionalities. Hopefully, these will inform and inspire you so that you'll feel comfortable creating your own dream projects in robotics.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves. In this book, I'm going to assume quite a bit of knowledge of not only the BeagleBone Black, but also programming in general and specifically Linux. If you're truly a beginner, you'll have to start with my other book on the BeagleBone Black, BeagleBone Robotic Projects, Packt Publishing. Richard Grimmett has more fun that should be allowed working on robotics projects while teaching Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at Brigham Young University Idaho. He has a Bachelors and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering and a PhD in Leadership Studies. He also has 26 years of experience in the Radar and Telecommunications industries, and even has one of the original brick phones. He has written books on the basics of using the BeagleBone Black for robotics projects, and another for the Raspberry PI and yet another for the Arduino.

Charles Hamilton is the owner of HudsonWerks, a New York City-based DIY hardware and new product development shop. Passionate about emerging technologies, open source hardware, and the maker movement, his background as a "technology creative", entrepreneur, and maker provides readers with a unique perspective. Rodolfo Giometti

Rodolfo Giometti is an engineer, IT specialist, GNU/Linux expert and software libre evangelist. He is the author of the books BeagleBone Essentials, BeagleBone Home Automation Blueprints and GNU/Linux Rapid Embedded Programming by Packt Publishing and maintainer of the LinuxPPS projects. He still actively contributes to the Linux source code with several patches and new device drivers for industrial applications devices. During his 20+ years of experience, he has worked on the x86, ARM, MIPS, and PowerPC-based platforms.
