Managing group dynamics
A facilitator must develop good listening skills and learn to read the body language of the participants. Just as the lighthouse scans the horizon, so should be the facilitator continuously be aware of the level of engagement of the participants, be able to infer the meaning of the various behaviors, and intervene if needed. For example, if in a training workshop a participant seems to be uncomfortable with the topic of study, it is best to ask the group if they are comfortable with what was just covered. This gives participants opportunities to speak up and express what they are feeling. The same is true for any type of workshop. Some principles should be observed:
- Never embarrass someone or put anyone on the spot by giving undue attention, regardless of their behavior.
- Always maintain a professional composure and be matter of fact in dealing with the situation.
