SAFe® for DevOps Practitioners

Part 1 Approach – A Look at DevOps and SAFe® through CALMR

A year after the Flickr presentation at the O’Reilly Velocity conference and the initial DevOpsDays conference, John Willis and Damon Edwards tried to define the important elements of this new movement called DevOps at the 2010 DevOpsDays conference. They eventually settled on Culture, Automation, Measuring, and Sharing (CAMS).

CAMS remained the approach to DevOps until Jez Humble decided that a Lean Flow was also essential to DevOps and needed to be added to the model. CAMS then became CALMS.

Scaled Agile incorporated DevOps into the Scaled Agile Framework® in 2018. When they did this, they evaluated the current CALMS model and made a realization: sharing is an important part of culture. By establishing that the Culture was one of shared responsibility, it defined the kind of Culture needed for DevOps. It also allowed Recovery to be added to the model, which became CALMR.

In Part 1, we will examine Scaled Agile’s CALMR approach to DevOps. We will examine what characteristics form a Culture of Shared Responsibility. We will then examine the kinds of technology used for automation and who is responsible for setting them up. We will look at how a Lean Flow allows us to deploy quickly and with a high level of quality. We will then look at ensuring quality and security by continuously measuring the progress, correctness, and value of the product under development. Finally, we will look at preventing production failures and what corrective measures we can take if a production failure does occur.

This part of the book comprises the following chapters:

  • Chapter 2, Culture of Shared Responsibility
  • Chapter 3, Automation for Efficiency and Quality
  • Chapter 4, Leveraging Lean Flow to Keep the Work Moving
  • Chapter 5, Measuring the Process and Solution
  • Chapter 6, Recovering from Production Failures

  • Explore the five elements of the CALMR approach to avoid product development challenges
  • Use value stream management to introduce systems thinking and flow for product development
  • Demonstrate how the CD pipeline combines practices and technology to optimize your value stream
  • Purchase of the print or Kindle book includes a free eBook in the PDF format

Description

Product development and release faces overlapping challenges due to the combined pressure of delivering high-quality products in shorter time-to-market cycles, along with maintaining proper operation and ensuring security in a complex high-tech environment. This calls for new ways of overcoming these challenges from design to development, to release, and beyond. SAFe® for DevOps Practitioners helps you use a DevOps approach with the Scaled Agile Framework and details how value streams help you resolve these challenges using examples and use cases. The book begins by explaining how the CALMR approach makes DevOps effective in resolving product development roadblocks. Next, you’ll learn to apply value stream management to establish a value stream that enables product development flow, measure its effectiveness through appropriate feedback loops, and find ways of improving it. Finally, you’ll get to grips with implementing a continuous delivery pipeline that optimizes the value stream through four phases during release on demand. This book complements the latest SAFe DevOps courses, and you’ll find it useful while studying for the SAFe DevOps Practitioner (SDP) certification. By the end of this DevOps book, you’ll have gained a clear understanding of how to achieve continuous execution and release on demand using DevOps and SAFe.

Who is this book for?

This book is for IT professionals such as DevOps and DevSecOps practitioners, SREs, and managers who are interested in implementing DevOps practices using the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) approach. Basic knowledge of DevOps and agile software development lifecycle and methodology will be helpful.

As a DevOps practitioner with 10 years of experience, I highly recommend SAFe® for DevOps Practitioners: Implement robust, secure, and scaled Agile solutions with the Continuous Delivery Pipeline. This book is an essential guide for any DevOps team looking to implement a robust and scalable Agile framework in their organization. The book provides a comprehensive overview of SAFe® and its Continuous Delivery Pipeline, which is an end-to-end delivery system that enables the continuous delivery of software. The authors do an excellent job of breaking down the process into easily digestible chunks, making it easy to understand and implement. One of the things I appreciate about this book is its focus on security. In today's world, security is a critical concern, and the book provides valuable insights into how to build a secure pipeline and integrate security into every aspect of the delivery process.Another thing I appreciate about this book is its emphasis on scalability. The authors understand that many organizations are working on a large scale, and they provide guidance on how to scale Agile practices to meet the needs of the organization.Overall, SAFe® for DevOps Practitioners is an excellent resource for anyone looking to implement a robust and scalable Agile framework in their organization. The book is well-written, easy to understand, and provides valuable insights into the Continuous Delivery Pipeline and Agile practices. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to take their DevOps practice to the next level.

A lot of times you read books about DevOps and it's all technical or all theory. SAFe for DevOps Practitioners is the best of both worlds! Robert does a fantastic job distilling the practices and theory behind DevOps and how it applies to SAFe, and then provides some fantastic examples and real-world applications that make the content actionable.Regardless of whether you're a SAFe fan or not, this is a great book to grasp the fundamentals of DevOps and understand how to start implementing the ideas in your world!

SAFe for DevOps Practitioners is a great reference for those doing the SAFe DevOps certification or working with Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) DevOps mindset, culture, and practices. Colleagues have found the diagrams, references, and especially the quiz at the end of each chapter helpful. Would love to see more real-world examples in future updates of the book.

This is a detailed and descriptive book for understanding DevOps and Agile framework concepts. The author started the book by explaining the evolution of Devops principles and giving more detailed information to understand each and every concept in the world of Devops. This book will be considered as a rule book when we consult Devops frameworks for the organization and the author explains reasons to think project-based work to product-based work. Also, this book guides you on how to deploy, run and measure the efficiency of CI/CD process. My interesting section in this book is part 3 section on how to avoid the pitfalls in Devops, Reporting, and Recovery in DevOps implementation.I keep this book for my consultation reference.

Can I download the code files for Early Access titles? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

We try to ensure that all books in Early Access have code available to use, download, and fork on GitHub. This helps us be more agile in the development of the book, and helps keep the often changing code base of new versions and new technologies as up to date as possible. Unfortunately, however, there will be rare cases when it is not possible for us to have downloadable code samples available until publication.

When we publish the book, the code files will also be available to download from the Packt website.

How accurate is the publication date? Chevron down icon Chevron up icon

The publication date is as accurate as we can be at any point in the project. Unfortunately, delays can happen. Often those delays are out of our control, such as changes to the technology code base or delays in the tech release. We do our best to give you an accurate estimate of the publication date at any given time, and as more chapters are delivered, the more accurate the delivery date will become.
